Agreed, but after you put proxmox on it and virtualize a ton of services and use up some of those threads, otherwise this is insanely over powered for pfsense.

Pfsense, Plex, Home Assistant, any of the "arr" software, god the list could be big with all this power.

Any ideas to scrub these devices clean before installing our own OS? I suppose even barebone devices can carry BIOS/UEFI level malware, firmware rootkits, etc.

Malware could be unintentional. Like say, one of the part manufacturers or assemblers has poor security systems or quality controls, exposing their systems to hacks & malware.

You mean opnsense, right? Kidding.. however if you haven't tried opnsense, you should asap. It's much better than pfsense and amazingly stable.

No idea but it sounds like you might prefer something using coreboot. I've not found a nice open source mini maker that isn't $$ though

Coreboot sounds like a good concept. Doesn't look like it's available for this device (or most others) yet. Agree I may just have to spend more $$.

As tempting as this price is, it's not really a deal for my use when paying in other ways, like by becoming a potential malware host/victim or even just having a background thought about that possibility. May consider if I need a device for unimportant things and can keep it off the network.

An interesting take by Linus on Android TV boxes, which also applies to mini PCs:

FreeBSD should already support Intel 12/13/14th Hybrid Architectures by now at least as of 13.2 which was a while ago. E-Cores are roughly 50% the performance of a P-Core, while the Hyperthread on the P-Core is about 30% performance of a P-Core.

That's an overkill for pfsense. I run mine on an old checkpoint fw hardware. At least 5 years old. Works great.

Sadly code doesn't work on the older/cheaper version. I have the old version already, and love it. Would use another

But is it this small, form factor? I'm running my pfsense on a 10 year old tower PC, and would like to downsize

I have 12 VMs running on this, including a Blueiris VM.

Jackharvest.com to see what I did with the last-year model the NAB6.
