I recently purchased a refurbished AVR-X3800H from Denon. The box it was packed in was disgraceful. It had a hole in the side covered by a brown strip of duct tape. I returned the receiver as soon as I received it. If I was home when it was delivered, I would have refused delivery.

Ya they need to embrace an Apple refurb approach if they want to ask these prices for refurbs. Considering we've seen new for $1000.
I received my refurbished AVR-X1700H yesterday from Denon and the shipping label was from United Radio. "Denon Certified Refurbished" did not mean the unit was refurbished by Denon as I had assumed. The box was sturdy, but it was only a single box and the packing had shifted. The unit seems otherwise fine and free of scratches except a few on the back, likely from the original buyer's blindly plugging in cables from the front. One of the Wi-Fi antennas is a little loose. I may be able to secure it by removing the AVR's cover and tightening, but I'll have to break the seal. So I'll wait until the warranty expires to do that.
In my case, I'm still happy with the purchase and the price I paid, but Adorama has had lower prices on some popular new units than Denon has had on their refurbished.
