Not snake oil
There is a standard. There is in fact a licensing program. It was designed by a bunch of major car makers and fuel stations. The cost is miniscule but non zero to implement. The key detergent is PEA. Techron has PEA. Many fuel system cleaners don't. Cheap gas often does not. That is because there are multiple possible detergents that can be used and PEA is not the cheapest.
I own a 450 hp engine car. I like cars and I have spent a lot of time on this issue. IMHO PEA should be mandated. But the US is not some perfect country where everything that should happen, happens. Gas stations sell old fuel all the time and yes, gas does go bad over time. The minimum requirements are bunk like so many minimum requirements. If you have an old car or something that is a daily beater and you drive a lot, you can do whatever. My dealer charges me a liver for anything. The independent shops around me are lousy. I spend the extra $ cause I like my car and because of anything happens I am out a bunch of money.
Yes all the top brands use it. That's because for a tiny amount of money you get all the petrol heads with nice cars to come to your station and fill up premium gas. It's why I know exactly where is the one station in a 25 mile radius where I can get 100% gasoline gas. No top tier means they don't get my business. Multiply me by anyone with a good car who reads up on cars and you can work out why every top brand (hint … top tier) is top tier and the rest are not.

Other techron item is bogo (the high mileage one), made the mistake and that is 12 and not 10. little bit more expensive.
Best to get some spray carb/intake cleaner and spray out the intake while the engine is running. I do that every other oil change in my truck since its DI. Does a lot more than anything you can add to the gas. Bonus its cheaper as well.
I run a e40mix and i know ethanol gunks stuff up. i usually change my ecu file every couple tanks and run pure pump gas to clean things out. but would this help out as well.?

Injectors, for the most part, are self cleaning. Let alone they have solvent going through them all the time.
Worse thing is carbon build up not just on intake valves but the whole intake. Spraying into the throttle body while running does way more than anything you add to the gas.
And worse thing ethanol does for a car is wear seals out that are not made for that much alcohol. Its why Honda and a few others are fighting E15 roll outs.
Buying a reliable car with solid engine reviews, changing your oil regularly, not stressing your engine with hard accelerating/revving, and driving like a human being are far more important than these additives.

1. They have to be used regularly and on a fuel system in decent shape, meaning that they will contribute to keeping the system cleaner BEFORE the deposits bond to metal parts.
2. Wont work as well if the fuel system is older and deposits have already "bonded" to the metal parts of the system. In this case the deposits have to be physically removed as the cleaners wont be strong enough to liquefy them.
