Anyone running a nas that can handle multiple drives failing, insert a new drive and rebuild it. Big difference in quality/working hours of enterprise drives vs the commercial ones general users purchase.
I work in data storage and hard disks fail all the time, old or new. If your data is really critical, it should already be backed up and the disks in a mirror or RAID configuration. The failure rates follow a classic bathtub curve and refurbs already survived the infant mortality phase, so I'm not too concerned about buying refurbs.
I have them all. In the last decade, a single 5tb Seagate failed. No one can possibly know which models will fail at any point.

I bought a few of these to put in an UnRaid server. I'm primarily a Mac user. Recommendations on how I should test these drives prior to putting data on them in UnRaid? I guess I can put them in UnRaid and run the Read-Check on the entire array.

Other suggestions? I don't have a Windows box to run most of the existing Windows Disk Check software. Thanks!

UnRaid preclear is all you need, and is sop for new drives. For this drive it will take just under three days per pass, and you can do multiple passes if you feeling wild.

Thank you for the reply. Good deal then. I'll run one pass on the array and patiently wait for the results.

Yeah, so about those drives... Oopsy by me. Classic PEBKAC moment.

As I said, I'm used to WD drives. Well, apparently Seagate uses the error rate values to encode the information, with the first first bytes being number of errors and the lower bytes being total reads or writes. So, a value of, say, 0x0000059F43 is 0 errors out of 0x59F43 operations. I saw an ever increasing number every time I refreshed the data, did a sanity check by comparing it to a WD drives, which read all zeros, and assumed the Seagate was dying.

And the whole thing started because a loose screw at the back of the case, right next to the second drive, was bouncing between metal and plastic parts. At least, I think that was the cause, since removing that screw and then reseating and power cycling the drive a few times had been trouble-free.

I've never had a drive fail silently, so that scraping sound set me down the troubleshooting path.

Anyway, off to do the post edits of shame. I hope your RMA nightmares work out.
Glad things worked out for the better vs worse. And thank you for asking about my nightmares, after 2 months, paypal saw the games the seller was paying and 100% refund.

Be careful when trying to avoid sales tax as many states have a 'use tax' you are required to pay if you don't get charged sales tax. Many states now make you attest that you've paid all your use tax or are submitting it with your state tax return. If you get caught on this, expect them to come down on you hard with penalty and interest for however many years before they audited you and it was not paid. In one state I know they would purposely wait to hit a business since the pen+int was usually 200-300% by the time a few years went by--Caveat Emptor!
