For anyone using Health Equity as administrator for their Health Saving Account, be aware that they recently sent an e-mail to me which caused concern. Instead of receiving physical statements from the USPS each month, for years I have elected to have them e-mailed to me. Actually, the e-mail is just a reminder that the statement for that month is available on-line. Regardless, this saves me from reading twelve multi-page packages that go into the recycle bin (save a tree!) and saves Health Equity from the postage expense. However, for the one time a year that 1099s are issued, I kept that as a physical delivery. Literally one piece of paper.
The recent e-mail shown below is rather insulting and suggests Health Equity knows more about my intentions than I do. What a shitty way to do business. By the way, I've had an account with them for more than ten years and made the election for monthly electronic statements for the entire time. Now they think they know what I really wanted??? I think we all understand what their true intentions are and they have nothing to do with helping me.
"We're reaching out because you've opted to receive electronic monthly statements but have not elected to receive annual tax forms electronically. Many Health Savings Account (HSA) accountholders opt to receive e-tax forms to save time and money and to make electronic tax filing easier.
We believe that when you elected to receive e-monthly statements, you intended to receive e-tax statements as well. Our electronic election process required you to make separate elections for monthly statements and tax forms, but the process was unclear.
To meet your e-statement preference, we will start sending your tax forms electronically, effective immediately. If this update reflects your preferred delivery method, you do not need to take any action. If you did not intend to elect e-tax forms, you can adjust your delivery preferences at any time:"
So be on the lookout for this in your Inbox, or worse, Spam folder. Unless you go online and undo their action, no 1099 will be sent in the mail.
P.S. Based on their insulting insinuation that they know better what I wanted than I do, I was initially tempted to have everything sent via physical delivery. Perhaps then they'd get the message. Upon reflection, I figured this was petty and won't help the planet. Ironically, I'll bet some nimrod at Health Equity gets a Christmas bonus for their perverted trick. Then again, they just might be elected to Congress.

They could have accomplished their goal of verifying your decision with a courtesy email, instead of simply assuming your intentions were not to split methods. There are separate options for a reason and they belittle you when they assume you made an error by selecting your desired options. Taking action on their opinion with no verified reason is a violation. They need to learn from this with your direct feedback.
