Ok, turntables for those who can't afford a direct drive.
DD doesn't matter. All that matters is correct speed without variation.

Audiophiles disagree and it's not a consensus which is better. Some segue belt drive may not remain calibrated to the right speed over time and some say direct drive adds noise. Take one of the online FLAC vs MP3 tests, if you score anywhere near 50% you'll never give a shit about belt vs direct drive. When I bought my turntable I didn't even check which it had, that's probably the right mindset of your in the market for a <$250 turntable like us.

No. Most audiophile TT's are belt drive. The motor is usually totally separate from the plinth and only connected by the belt itself.
Most DD TT's you find today are for DJ's.

Isn't it preferable for a belt-drive 'table to have a strobe so that over time, as the belt wears and stretches a bit, that it's easy to make corrections for speed?

Any real feedback on these? Thinking of getting something to replace the cheap $60 suitcase one we have, but not looking to break the bank.

I have the RT81 Elite (Audio Technica AT95E cartridge, in walnut) that my wife gifted me last Christmas and love it. It looks beautiful and sounds great. I haven't had a turntable since the late 80's and it's been fun re-starting my record collection. It's also a blast to get records as gifts from my grand kids and share the music with them.

It's worth it to get something that looks this nice, and encourages new ways to enjoy your music. One of the best additions to our home in years.

I paired mine with a set of Klipsch The Fives for the first year, and then recently got The Nines from a deal here (discontinued now). Powered speakers a a nice way to start and sound good. I'm sure I'll eventually buy a nice amp and passive speakers though. But we get a lot of enjoyment out of our music, trying different ways to listen over the years. So I'd say just do it! Smilie

I can't decide what to do...now considering moving all the way up to the RT85. Seems like big upgrades and negate the need to update further down the road.

Hmmm, seems the deal here is on the lower end models. Beside that, I've never needed a super high-end turntable to get good sound - it's more about the speakers and maybe your amp. The subtle differences (other than a good phono-cartridge) aren't that noticeable to me. I'm pretty picky about good sound too. I love the RT81 I have and it's a great price with this deal.,
