Attached is their "Condition Guide" for the three condition categories in case it helps. I noticed some posts asking about the condition of these watches. Basically Certified Refurb is like new, Reburb has some signs of wear, Pre-owned has even more signs of wear.

I'm assuming "refurb" doesn't mean new batteries…

At least with Apple refurbs, you get a new battery. My wife has a Best Buy "geek squad" refurb Apple Watch and it dies before lunch. 80% battery health.
I received this today (Sunday around noon) in Seattle, WA, purchased Friday morning at 8am. Roughly 48 hours from purchase to wearing it - that was super fast shipping! I bought the "certified refurbished" model for $479, it arrived flawless, looks brand new. Battery Health is at 100%, so this really is a slick deal! No regrets here, I'm stoked!!
My personal experiences from A4C, I have ordered from them several times over the years. Their certified refurbished always used to look brand new, aka store returns.

But the last two orders that I made in the past month, both came very much scuffed up and very much "used". I was very much disappointed and initiated a return on one of the order. The customer service was very friendly and didn't make any fuss about processing the return and sent me a return label right away.

My recent order also came a bit scuffed up. I am a bit hesitant initiate another return in a month.

Edit: I ordered both apple (3 iPads and one iPad keyboard) and non-apple (Sony, Anker) products from them

Just be careful as sometimes private sellers are selling watches that are on finance plans with carriers (so little out of pocket cost to seller). Then they report them as lost/stolen and you have a watch that's blacklisted...

I bought it from a seller with lots of good reviews. I hope the watches don't get blacklisted though.

My first unit was Starlight, has warranty until December 2024, battery 100% , 30 days to apple care+, however, had some small nicks on the bezel and the metal bar around the display, my guess, those came during shipping. Only if you look at extremely closely you'll notice. This was bothering me a little bit. Ordered medium Alpine green again, came today, this is pristine, not even a spot. Warranty until December 24 and 40 days to add apple care plus. I am very happy once again, great deal from A4C. Will return the first one.

I see sellers with good reviews who are obviously selling shady stuff. Apple Watches and phones that are only a couple of weeks old but they decided to sell because they just don't use it. That's fine once, but they keep listing new watches and phones. There is some kind of fraud involved.

What I've read is that even though all watches start out saying 100% battery, some batteries are in excess of 100%. The OS just doesn't show it. No idea how true that is.
I looked into this some more. You are right - it seems that with Apple products the actual battery capacity is often higher than the design capacity. This is to account for manufacturing variability - Apple wants to ensure that the batteries will always meet the design capacity when new. In addition, the capacity of lithium batteries will actually increase a little during the first few months before it starts decreasing. Since the battery health is based on the design capacity, this would explain why battery health could still show as 100% after the first year.

In addition, I also learned that when you send your watch to Apple for a battery replacement, they just send you a new or refurbished replacement watch rather than actually replacing the battery in the watch that you sent them. This is why in some regions they will only provide the "battery replacement" service if the battery health is below 80%. Though apparently in California they are legally required to provide the service regardless of the battery health if the customer requests it (and is willing to pay for it).

And further to my concern, Apple has stated that the "battery replacement" service will not affect the water resistance rating. As of today, Apple is still providing the battery replacement service all the way back to the Series 2 (which was released over 7 years ago). So in 5 years or so if the battery life becomes unacceptable I can send it in and get a replacement. Sounds good to me.

I have been debating these last few days whether to order another watch in the hopes of getting one with more factory warranty remaining. I was already leaning towards not doing so, and the information above has solidified my decision. While obsessive me would've loved to have received a watch with 11 months of factory warranty remaining, the one they sent me is absolutely flawless - I cannot not find a single scratch or wear mark on the screen or case. And the watch was never advertised as having any factory warranty remaining in the first place so I cannot in good conscience return the one that I got. A4C has held up their end of the bargain and I will do the same.

I had an iPhone 13 Pro Max that started acting weird a couple of months after I bought it brand new from Apple. Took it to the store and they replaced it for free because it had the 1 year warranty. If for some reason your watch stops working, then you'll be out of luck. When I called a4c to return the watch, the lady sent me a label, no questions asked. So instead of having this thought at the back of your mind, just return it and hope your next order has a longer warranty.

My second watch just arrived, green alpine loop, it has warranty until December 5th 2024. 23 days to add Apple Care. I am going to keep this one and return the original watch with warranty until April of 2024. Great deal on something else I probably don't need buy you only live once. I can sell my Apple Watch series 7 to offset some of the cost of the Ultra.

In for 1, black/grey trail loop.
I got the series 9 for Christmas which I can return before January 31st.
Was on the fence but I saw someone with this on yesterday and really liked the look of it.
Hopefully I'll get one in pristine condition with some AppleCare time left!

Update: Received watch today. Perfect condition. 100% battery health, warranty through 12/24, 20 days left to add AppleCare

Just sold my AW6 (with some extras) for $200 on FB Marketplace and, as luck would have it, I'm headed to Phoenix tomorrow and a Best Buy 30 min away from my hotel has an "Open Box - Good" AWU for $438+tax. Guess I'll run its SN through the warranty checker and see if it's worth keeping. Otherwise will probably play the Alpine Loop roulette once again.

Point taken, I'm relying on the 90-day warranty from A4C which will hopefully be long enough for any potential issues to show themselves. By the way I have nothing against those of you that want to play the buy and return game, like I said I was seriously considering doing the same. But I tend to obsess too much over such details and for me it's best to just accept what I got and move on.

I just finished a battery test. I charged it to 100% by 11:30pm on Friday night and put the watch on. I didn't charge it again until 11:30pm Monday night when it was down to 19%. That's 72hrs including 3 nights of sleep tracking. I'm super happy - I will no longer have to deal daily charging when camping or traveling. Admittedly my watch usage is pretty light - I pretty much only use it for sleep tracking and notifications. My watch is not cellular-activated and I usually keep it in airplane mode. I also don't have the screen set to be on all the time. One thing I will need to get used to is that it takes longer to charge - I fell asleep Monday night before it had finished charging LOL.

Picked up the watch from BB - no scratches and although it has clearly been opened and tried on, it hadn't been registered, so I got a full year's warranty. Huge difference from the one in "Fair" condition I had found for barely a discount ($550ish) at the Eden Prairie, MN outlet. That thing was already out of warranty and looked like it had been through a few rounds with the washing machine.
