The only issue with this is that using Chase points to purchase gift cards, even with this slight discount, is really not a good use of points. The value you are getting for them is far under what you can get if you use them for travel, such as transferring them to hotel or airline partners and purchasing tickets or hotel nights that would otherwise be a much higher cash rate. Using points for this should be more of a last resort if you really have nothing else to use your points on and just don't have the cash

I overall agree with this, but also would like to convert points to physical good versus travel, which can frequently be cheaper via paying cash. I tend to redeem Chase points in particular when they have their Apple sales.

Hotels if you like to stay at hotels. I claimed my points for AirBnB which is rarely on sale. I traveled Europe for a month in September and almost everywhere I stayed at was an AirBnB. Not trying to get into the AirBnB vs Hotel argument. Some places around the world, AirBnB's provide a much better bang for the buck while feeling like a local.

I'm sure you're right with maximizing points with travel, I just don't know the breakdown so any info would be appreciated. Doing credit card points to travel programs can be as mind boggling as toilet paper math for me lol.

Anytime I try to use my points for travel/hotel/cars with chase points, it never seems worth it. I always end up finding a cheaper price outside of their portal. I don't know what I'm doing wrong lol.
Because of this I have over 250,000+ points just sitting there waiting for a travel deal. Any tips on how to find these points travel deals would be appreciated.

What you are doing wrong is using the portal.

Transferring to Hyatt for hotels will get you 2-2.5 cents a point pretty reliably vs 1-1.5 cents in the portal (depending which card you have)

Transfering to airlines will frequently get you similar amounts for coach fares (and occasionally better, esp for last minute flights).... and will get you 4-8 cents a point for business class or first class fares.

See above. Transfers is where it's at. Esp. for higher end airfares.

For example earlier this year (note this is with amex points but same idea for chase just the details might differ) I got a business class roundtrip on ANA JFK->HND (14 hours in The Room, arguably the best business seat in the sky) and HND->LAX for 88,000 points. That's a $7000 cash airfare.

That's an unusually good redemption- but even at half that value it beats the hell out of a 10% bonus for gift cards.

There's a subreddit r/awardtravel that specifically created to help people out. Takes a little bit of effort. It's on the sidebar as well for the churning subreddit if you can't find it.

Chase points are clutch for flights. A united flight was $800 last minute but I transferred only 155k in points to get that same flight on United. I transferred my points to united first and didn't use the portal.

Wow so you used $1,550 in points (assuming points are 1 cents each) instead of paying $800? Nice

Just want to point out here that, while an $800 ticket for 15K United miles is absolutely an excellent value, that value is coming from United, not from Chase. In other words, United gave you a choice of paying $800 or using 15K United miles for that flight (a value which is quite common for last-minute flights on United). There was nothing about Chase that made this a great value -- other than the fact that you could transfer Ultimate Reward points to United miles.

I think that the point here is that transferring points to any airline or hotel chain can provide great value (or lousy value) depending on the specific booking you are wanting to make. And that 10% off gift cards, while I can totally respect might work for some people, is usually not the best value for your points.

Exactly.

I'm going to use this opportunity to provide a shameless plug for FrequentMiler.com, which is a great resource for this whole points-and-miles game. I have zero affiliation, but continue to benefit greatly from their advice. They just put out a video very recently that helps you get started. And, while they do make a commission from some things, they are very transparent about it, and work hard to keep their advice independent from those commissions.

My Chase Freedom card only gives me about 80% of the value if I use points at Amazon. However my Amazon Visa gives me 100% of the points. If you are concerned about losing value, you can choose to apply the points directly to your credit card and get the full cash value.

Don't get into this trap. Hodl!
(transfer to partners when you understand how the bank points programs work Chase's UR, Citi's TY, Amex's MR)
And most importantly never sign up for Credit Cards from Slickdeal's links. These are always promoted mediocre offers. Check other places.
