I got Pixel6a a year ago in a similar deal from Mint. Even though Mint claimed that phone is locked, I tried inserting a sim from an INTL carrier and it worked. When I called Mint after 12 months then they told me that Google phones are not locked so there is no need to unlock.
I am not sure about 7pro but mine 6a was unlocked from the day I received.
Ported my number to Google Voice many years ago, been using Mint most of those years as a "new customer" by getting a new number each time and setting GV to forward calls to the new number each time (a few quick taps in the GV app does it). This time I'll have to get my own number somewhere else to port in ($3 by setting up a new Google account & porting that out is my most likely path), but everything else is the same.

I look like a new account to Mint each time by using Gmail's "plus sign" feature whereby you insert some random text preceded by a plus sign right before the @ in your email address and that extra stuff looks like a different address to Mint, but Gmail ignores it. For example:

[email protected]

Looks unique to Mint, but still gets processed to the [email protected] address by Google. I often use the company and date for the random text to ensure it's unique, so I'd have:

[email protected]
Last year during the big Mint sale I got this phone and ported our numbers over. I'm a fan of the phone (no fingerprint issues) and Mint's pricing, but beware there are known MMS issues the Pixel 7 Pro on Mint that are not fixed after over a year.

Texting via group texts sometimes doesn't go through (or come through) and sending pictures via text just don't work. After troubleshooting for a year with support and reddit forums, there still isn't a fix. It got better after switching the APN and found one that works OK, but it's never consistent.

Just a warning to anyone considering the switch.

Mint ran this deal a few months ago. The phone was definitely locked to their service.

Well my iPhone 13 Pro Max was locked when I bought it from them, even though I paid full price, so I wouldn't doubt it.

I had to fight with support like a dozen times to get it unlocked so I could use an e-Sim on an international trip after a year plus of owning the phone + purchasing a year subscription (so 2 years total with the phone, which again I paid full price)
Good to know. Thank you for the info.

I am a current mint customer. Can I buy this phone and swap out my existing phone? I just cannot use the 12 month service, right? Since I am an existing customer. And I don't have to worry about the phone being locked, since I am already with mint? I feel like this is a stupid question... Lol... 😬 πŸ˜‚

i am an international student and I plan to arrive to us in january. I currently do not have a number to port in to mint mobile.
Can someone please let me know if porting in is a requirement for the additional free 6 months or is it a requirement to buy the phone.

Can i buy the phone now and have it shipped to a friend in the us.
You can get a port in number with pin on eBay and order the phone. This deal is as good as it gets.

Reading their unlock policy on the website says it can be unlocked 12 months after initial activation by calling customer care, so essentially locked only for 12m
Seems like all the recent Mint Mobile deal, the phones are locked for 12 months.

Since the plan is only 12 months and you can ONLY unlock AFTER 12 months, so what happen if you try to unlock but your plan already expired? Do you have to have a valid Mint Mobile plan in order to unlock?

And no way to unlock online and have to call them to unlock?

You still have to port a non-Mint number over. You could use a Google Voice number.

buy it with physical SIM.
pop-in your SIM card and you should be good.
if the new SIM doesn't come activated, activate it later if needed.
