In for 10,000 I'm starting an airline that it's going to return the luxury of giving you a bag of peanuts when you bought your $500 airline ticket

Pretty sure because most times any food will be more expensive in it's raw form (fresh tilapia vs icq tilapia, ground sirloin vs sirloin steak cuts , fresh strawberries vs strawberry preserves, etc).

One of the few times you see the processed version being significantly more expensive is when the "processing" takes significant time/energy (aging/curing - think bacon or dry aged meats) or dehydrating (jerky)

I don't understand why the processed peanuts (ready to eat) is cheaper than raw peanuts you can buy on Amazon or ebay; and unshelled peanuts are often more expensive than shelled peanuts. Can someone explain the peanut economics?

Wow the honey ones are $2.66 a pound which, anymore, is a good price on the one pound jar.

Does anyone else think the ones in the can taste better than the ones in the individual packages? IMO the ones in the packages seem less sweet and have a different texture. I've purchased both from the grocery store many times.

When you start to have over 100 million passengers per year like the bigger airlines you will realize how much you can save by no longer offering free peanuts. Use that savings to provide a bonus for your CEO and CFO, while using some of that money to control the unionization of your workers by buying the pockets of politicians.

My guess is the masses don't want raw or unshelled peanuts, therefore the price is higher. I cant remember if I've ever seen Planters offer a raw peanut, though if they do it would have to be a premium price since that would be a low production run. So the raw market is filled with smaller distributors who, rightfully, sell it a a premium, since they likely don't have the volume to sell it at a lower cost, same with the unshelled. Unshelled have another disadvantage though, since it takes up considerably more volume for the packaged weight, which means storage in a facility or on shelves could factor in the higher cost, in addition to the lack of demand. Though, if you buy in bulk (25+ lbs) you can get unshelled Hampton Farm peanuts fairly cheap (webstaurant), Hampton Farm is one of the distributors that 5Guys uses, IIRC.

Then there's the whole "premium" markup for raw/minimally processed foods, which has become the norm. Maybe its legit, extra quality control and whatnot, who knows.

I remember my grandma telling me how the fingerling potatoes used to be dirt cheap back in the day and now they are quite expensive. Lobster used to be food for the poor or imprisoned as well.

I'll be your first customer, but your planes need to be shaped like peanuts, you need a nutty name for the airline and an even nuttier slogan.

It has to do with the economies of scale. 500k packages vs 1000 packages as it's hard to sell raw peanuts and it doesn't sell in volume. Honey roasted peanuts on the other hand will sell in large quantities.

That's good, but you aren't thinking big enough.

If you want to REALLY squeeze people, you need to get talking heads blaming some other even more disaffected group as the reason people can't have peanuts.

Like subsidies on elite nuts like cashews, or people with peanut allergies. You need to get people REALLY outraged at some other random disaffected group getting nuts somewhere in order to maximize your no nut profits!

At least where I live in the US, the cheapest way to get raw peanuts is at East Asian grocery stores. They tend to be easy to find on sale for $4-5/2lbs on a daily basis. These snacking peanuts are on sale for starters, and on top of that, it has always been the case in my observation that Amazon is very overpriced as a rule for groceries that aren't carried under their "fresh" labeling, particularly anything you'd normally go to an East Asian, south Asian or Central American grocery store to get in person.

And as others have pointed out, yeah, economies of scale are also relevant here. I suspect of Amazon's customers, the vast majority don't want to fry/dry roast their own peanuts. Whereas a store where Thai people shop is going to be able to sell a lot more raw, and thus afford to sell those more cheaply.
