Thanks OP. I'm heavy into the ecosystem and always thought about getting one, but never looked into it because I have googles and Alexa's all over the house.

Grabbed one because impulse buys are my thing. It's a disease I caught from slickdeals almost 10 years ago
Repped, thanks for sharing. I was previously buying HomePod Minis refurbished from Ebay. I think the best price I ever got was $45 plus tax, but the seller increased to $60 a while ago.

These work great as Matter (Thread) and Bluetooth network extenders, they have a built-in thermostat and hygrometer, and in a stereo pair, they sound surprisingly good for their size and cost. Also, love or hate Siri, these work great for issuing commands to her.
True, but I view this ability as a kind of negative because Apple don't let you manually select the device you want to use as a HomeKit hub. I have many HomeKit devices that run nicely with an ethernet-connected Apple TV as a hub. But when it restarts to install software updates, one of my HomePod Minis always becomes the new hub. Eventually I'll notice that the HomeKit network is slow to respond, so then I have to manually restart all of the HomePod Minis so that the Apple TV becomes the new hub again. It's kind of a pain and even sometimes requires me to unplug the HomePods for a while before the Apple TV will become the new hub.

Genuinely curious why service members aren't afforded steep discounts as simply the normal cost at the BX, provided they agree not to resell etc.

Was about to grab one to try out but backed off. Any benefit to using this over Sonos One speakers? Or not worth it since I already have Sonos?

Sonos Ones sound much better than the HomePod Mini, and probably also better than the big HomePod.

Just got a cancelation notice for the order of 2 blue ones that was made 3+ hours ago after initially getting a confirmation. Looks like another one that AAFES isn't going to honor because they over sold what they had available.

Recently bought my first house and have been researching smart homes quite a bit. Started with Amazon but they are showing some red flags. I already had some Alexa devices but returning the new ones I bought. Amazon recently put previously free features behind a paywall and laid off a chunk of the Alexa division. My first experience with Google was my house coming with a Nest Guard. Now Google is dropping support for it next month.

Apple is leading the charge with Matter. It has a lot of similarities to HomeKit. In the (hopefully) near future, the thought is that the influx of matter devices will mean a lot more devices are compatible with Apple Home. Apple Home would become a much more compelling offering.

All that to say, I'm trading in my Echo devices for HomePods. It's significantly more expensive (at base prices, this deal makes it a great value) but I'm betting on Apple and Matter.

It's totally a WiFi issue: WiFi is incredibly slow and has high latency compared to gigabit Ethernet. My home has 92 HomeKit devices and 5 cameras recording to HomeKit Secure Video. Trust me, a HomePod Mini will always lag with such a system compared to a wired Apple TV.
I mean Wi-Fi at your home problem not Wi-Fi as a technology problem.

I'm in the process of de-googling myself. One last thing I have is nest smart speakers. Google is the worst when it comes to pulling the plug on products and projects and equally bad at customer support.

Amazon is an attractive option but I don't want to support Amazon if there are alternatives.

So I went the self hosting and Apple HomeKit route. HomeKit for devices my wife uses most, and zigbee and z-wave for the rest.

I'm looking at doing something similar. The connectivity standards alliance were behind Zigbee and are also behind matter, with the main advantage of matter being not needing additional hubs besides the main homepod/apple tv/ google hub.

From what I've gathered, matter can be finicky and it's not yet the promised utopia. But I have faith in what Apple throws its weight behind and think it will work out.

I'll have to run home assistant to connect my existing smart switches over to Apple home... Other stuff I'm just waiting for good matter over thread versions to come out. Like for smart locks, there isn't a great option with matter and home key. This may be irrelevant to some because you can just get a lock compatible with HomeKit and be good to go. But I like the flexibility that matter provides and think it could be a minor benefit when potentially selling.

I'm still seeing White as in stock right now. It was showing out of stock yesterday when I checked before your post.
