Because H&R Block and Intuit work very hard to make sure the government isn't allowed to do so.
why can't the government just tell me how much i need to pay? wtf
Yup! One word: lobbying.

Gotta love our corrupt system, causing people to spend millions of extra dollars and God knows how many man-hours filing tax returns that really have no reason to exist in this day and age.

I can understand how you as a CPA will oppose simplifying taxation because it may impact your TAM. But each of the things you've mentioned above can easily be simplified and automated. You have 2 kids, here's your child credit. You paid to a qualified daycare facility and have 2 kids that go there, here's your credit. You paid to and were enrolled in a qualified educational institute, here's your credit. Just as they have to do already, each of these recipient entities need to upload their side of transactions too so that all these can be automatically reconciled. Is it possible? Yes, most certainly. Here's an old episode from PBS News Hour that talked about it: https://www.pbs.org/newshour/show...nother-way [pbs.org]

But again, all this is wishful thinking and I don't think there's willingness in our Govt to do it - especially due to the lobbying by these companies and CPAs. Good luck for your tax season. Peace.

I do not charge for any tax services I provide as it is not my source of income so you assuming so makes you look ignorant.

> You paid to a qualified daycare facility and have 2 kids that go there, here's your credit.

How does the government know how much you paid? The government is explicit when saying you can not reply on others to submit their information to the government for the calculation of your taxes.

> each of these recipient entities need to upload their side of transactions too so that all these can be automatically reconciled

Uploaded when, at the April 15th deadline like everyone else? So when will reconciliation really be done? And then is the business is wrong you just punished the family doing their taxes because the items will not reconcile. Crap in crap out.

Your ideas are just additional ways to force people who shouldnt pay more to pay more because you are pushing laziness on people.

I agree where you're getting at. But you're still looking inside the box with all these credits, deductions, loopholes, and things that generally complicate taxes. Why must we pay for something, then get money back from the government? Would it not be easier for the government to just subsidize these things at the source so we pay less up front and be done with it? No, we can't do that because capitalism. Our tax system is tied to our economic system, which is tied to our political system. This partly explains the improbability of any change happening anytime soon.

You can. If you work a W2 job you modify your withholdings so you keep more every paycheck to pay for such items. So instead of getting money back at the end of the year, you are getting it back throughout the year. Problem solved. Or are you saying you rather have the government take that money and give it to the entities they want to instead of having it in your pocket so you choose?

Exactly.

The gov should provide free tax prep software, and the IRS has finally been allowed to start a pilot at providing it this year.

Many free tax software solutions already exist. What you are asking for is to have tax money taking from other places to pay government employees to sit at phones and to tech support for software? Seems inefficient.

Got the GC in yesterday (physical card) and.... 'invalid code'. Strange. So I chatted with customer service, and they didn't even ask me for the code itself. Instead, they offered a $9.99 refund to my payment method. Very odd.

For the past 3 years the TT sale that hits 12/27-12/28 only comes around once. I've never seen them repeated. I've been able to hit it for 20, 21, and 22. I just missed it this year, so I have to settle for $45 no gc.

I got TT Premier & TT Business on this deal, thanks OP. Both gift cards were "lost" so I had AMZ resend instead of accepting a credit. Now their system shows the original cards are "found" with a new ship date and a second set of cards also being shipped.

I can't tell you how often I've gotten AMZ stuff for free b/c their fulfillment "robots" mess up & then their CS dept credits me back in full. Even better is when a seller messes up their listing and AMZ full credits the order as received no described.

It's typically under $50 - $70 when it happens, and they never ask for the merch to be returned. It's not earth shaking, but it happens often enough that with each order, I cross my fingers and hope for a problem.
