The price for this particular tent is much lower than everywhere else.

Sold and shipped by Amazon.

With recent eBike saga, the reputation of "sold and shipped by" "Amazon" is severely tainted. Hope this time it is not a scam.

took my son in laws Tacoma 4x4 with a smitty brand rtt camping in Tahoe area last Sept and disliked it immensely. Right away on will notice that it's much colder with so much exposure to wind and rain vs a ground tent. Climbing up/down on the ladder with loading/unloading gear is a chore. Getting out to pee adds more chill at night and when wet, the ladder is slippery. Forget it if one has a dog. These things are heavy and the wind noise at 60mph is loud. He sold it after using it for a few outings and took a 60% loss. FB Marketplace is loaded with these for sale. IMO they are a solution to a problem that doesn't exist. Thanks for the info. I always wondered why people used these. The only use case I can think of is in Africa or something and you are worried about predators or snakes or something getting you while sleeping

bears can climb trees so a ladder is even easier for them. To be fair, some people like them so there is that. Just not my thing. One can also google roof damage to cars due to the weight of two people and the 150-200 lbs of the unit itself. Check your local Craigslist/FB and you might find a deal. I bought a canvas tent and very happy with it.

I concur with everything said. I had a RTT for a while. They sound awesome but aren't as great in practice. I'd also add that they are a pain to get on and off your truck. So you end up leaving it on all of the time which kills drivability and mpg.
I sold mine at a loss too and ended up getting a nice pop up tent for when I take the family camping plus a truck bed topper for when I'm on my own.

yeah, it's a love/hate thing with talking to campers that have or had them. Here's my son in laws truck he keeps at my house since they live in SF where vehicle break in's are the norm. Topper is a Smartcap brand and made well. Time for some coast camping as we usually hit the 60's by day and 45-50 at night.

OOTL... ebike saga?
Basically on Dec 8 2023, quite a few eBike on Amazon were listed at significant discount.
For example Heybike Racer is listed at $225 and few others. All are "Sold and Shipped By" Amazon.

Based on the reputation of Amazon, many many people placed order and expecting to receive the eBike as Christmas present.

These orders went through the step really fast. Within few minutes and UPS tracking number is created and the charges are pending on credit card. All looks promising.

However, after the initial movement, there is no update on UPS tracking any more.
People are still trust Amazon's based on past reputation at that time and still belives the bike will be delivered.

Around Dec. 20ish, Amazon suddenly cancelled all these eBike orders without any notification. Most people get $10 as compensation for the "minor inconvenience". This action definitely screwed a lot people of Christmas shopping plan. and $10 credit is just like a joke to all the buyers.

So lot of people called, chatted, emailed to CEO and etc, some of them get the promise of refund of the difference of new bike, some got nothing. Some purchased new eBike and Amazon is not honoring the promised refund. This whole thing is just a big hot mess.

Total unimaginable, unacceptable for the "Shipped and Sold by Amazon"

I mean... sure it sucks but it sounded like it was a price mistake(s), and whenever this has happened and the price difference is big, 95% of the cases orders get cancelled regardless of which retailer it was.

I disagree. These are certainly not for everyone but I have no regrets after buying a Tuff Stuff Trailhead that's very similar to this one, last year. You're right about the ladder being slippery when wet but I've had no issues with rain. It POURED for nearly 24 hours in TN last summer and my tent stayed perfectly dry inside while some of the ground tents around didn't fare as well. Haven't had a problem with cold temps but I don't camp in the winter. 50 degrees was no problem. My first trip with it on my Ridgeline was 1200+ miles. Gas mileage was impacted a bit (mounted halfway above roof height - a lower rack might help with that), but I've literally never noticed any wind noise.

I've also had my dog in mine. She won't climb the ladder obviously, and she's about 40 pounds and doesn't mind me lugging her around, so that may not work with some dogs, especially bigger ones. And this is a very personal thing of course, but I'm over 40 and don't mind climbing the ladder. Being elevated is nice in the summer, as I camp mainly in hot weather.

If you camp at mainstream campgrounds with manicured tent pads, ground tents are fine, but I like being able to set up wherever, whenever, and not having to deal with mud, packing up a wet tent, or non-flying creepy crawlies. Everyone's situation is different, and my rooftop tens suites me wonderfully. Recon Recovery has the Trailhead for under $1000 w/ free shipping still but sometimes they have even better deals.

Some of them may be a pain, larger ones especially. But I can get my 2-person Trailhead that's listed as 110 pounds on and off by myself, loaded and with the cover on. I just lean it up against the lowered tailgate, slide it up onto the tailgate, then lean it against the back of the bed rack and slide it right up into position. I imagine getting it up onto the roof of a Wrangler or big SUV would be much harder. The eight small bolts that secure it to the rack go on and come off in no time.

I like it but I understand why some people may not, or may not like certain models. My only issue was finding a rack I liked for a 2nd gen Ridgeline. Ended up adding custom Tacoma-style bed rails and using a little extra hardware and engineering to attach an adjustable Hooke Road rack marketed for Tacomas, but that's another story. I'd like a bed topper, and there are a couple for the Ridgeline, but as with most stuff for this truck, there are not many options.

I would suggest you look at the measurements carefully. I'm on my second RTT (first was a hard one, next was a soft sided one like this).

A three person tent could have a mattress pad somewhere between a twin and a full. A two person is very close to a twin sized (see attached pictures of an Ikamper).

So a 3 person is going to be a tight fit for more than 2 people.
