Seems like a good deal for home office. The same seller has another HP with i5-11400, 8G memory but only $313? Is the CPU and memory upgrade of this one worth the $100 difference?

The 5700G offers about 40% better performance than the i5-11400, is newer, 8 cores versus 6, has high end IGP graphics. It always comes down to price versus performance. Another 8GB of DDR4 is cheap, so it's not much of a factor. At some point it becomes about how much you want to spend, and what your usage needs are. Higher performance often equals a longer span of time before upgrade or replacement is needed or wanted.

After allowing for RAM, the difference in price is about 25% more cost for 40% better performance.

Not shabby. I bought 2 of these about a year ago now at $649 each. They have been reliable and only changes I made were RAM upgrades (64GB) and a fast larger NVMe drive.

You sound happy with them, and I'm assuming that you went with AMD. How would you rate their overall performance out of 5 stars?

Yes the same machine here but of course new not refurbed. AMD 5700G. I would put them 4/5…solid desktops for sure. My only gripe would be the relatively tiny power supply and proprietary nature of the board and what not. But they have been solid.

Thanks for sharing; it'll probably help someone considering this purchase.

Unclear from the listing on ebay - is there a functional pcie x16 slot that could be used for your own dedicated GPU? Or is this one of those proprietary nonsense situations where you can't really get off the shelf GPUs to work with it?

EDIT: Ah, found the answer on HP's website: they at least claim it has:

2 M.2; 1 PCIe x16; 1 PCIe x1

Still unclear to me if the slot and the space around it is unobstructed enough to put a video card in, but that is a bit more tempting

Be advised; there's no harness for GPU power, so it will have to be a low power card. Even then you'll have to confirm that the HP PSU has enough wattage available for the card you want to install. These office HPs are unfriendly to upgrades for the most part; you may want to consider an entry level gaming platform like a Victus if you want discrete graphics. There's one on another post that comes with a RX 6400 for $397. It's a R5 5600G, the CPU right below this one.

I am not sure how this is better when you can get a brand new I5 13th Gen for $449 with 2 Year warranty from Costco [costco.com].

Better WiFi / Bluetooth
Better OS (Windows Pro)
Better Warranty
90 days return period
Larger SSD
Biggest gripe is Costco one has only 8GB of RAM

This exact pc was $550 in may of 2021 from office depot. $400 2 years later and a refurb is very coarse deal. At $300 or so this would be decent.

5700G is now $180 at microcenter. Couple that with some cheap b550 board, cheap ram, hd, case, etc. For the $400-500 you can get something not as castrated as a prebuilt hp.

Castrated...totally appropriate. Prebuilt major brands have become very minimalistic in build quality and specifications. I'm old enough to remember when all desktops had standardized components top to bottom, and upgrades were easy and fun.

That Costco Dell is a great deal. Both have 2 year warranty, with similar CPU benchmarks. This one has DVDRW; the Dell has no optical drive. But I like it for $40 more with that new computer smell and fresher specifications. Pretty cheap to upgrade it to 16GB if desired.
