I have this grinder! It's been used daily for about 4 years. There is a small crack in the catch bin, otherwise it's been fine. That's probably my fault tapping it on the counter to get stuck coffee out. No maintenance performed, keeps on going.

My experience so far:
1. It's loud but it gets the job done
2. If you try to run it on the longest setting (18) twice or more, the bin can get very full and as it runs more coffee into the full bin it will sound like it is dying. Probably don't do that.

To deal with the above, I typically run it at night for the next mornings coffee if I think I need a cup earlier than when the rest of the house is up. Again, it is loud.
I've been using one for the last 8 years after buying it for $27.99 in 2016. Mechanically, I don't believe it's likely to break. The issue I had was that the clear hopper is affixed to a black disc that is utilized to set the grind size. It seems as though the easiest way to adjust the grind would be to just grab the hopper and turn it, but this will eventually break the connection between the disc and hopper. Instead, you should grab the disc on bottom and turn it to prevent breaking it. I just superglued the hopper back to the disc and it's still going 8 years later. If you drink the same beans in the same style (e.g. drip) then this is likely a non-issue as you won't even be adjusting it often.

The grind is decent, but it does make some fines. Luckily, the fines being statically charged adhere to the sides of the plastic container, so you can dump out the loose coffee, and then you can knock out the fines into the sink with your finger or a brush. The catch bin and hopper have not cracked. I would never bang thin plastic on the counter, and there's no reason to do so.

The grinder is a little messy and will get some grounds on to the counter as a tiny bit falls behind the catch bin.

I did note that at least one of the one star reviews is for a different model with a dial on the front, so the reviews are likely not all relevant to this design. Mine has never jammed or had any issue aside from the hopper having to be glued back to the selection disc.
12% one star reviews all for breaking after just a few uses.

Just a silly question, both Costco and Trader Joe's have coffee grinders free to use at exit points. Can we use them to grind our own coffee?
It's to grind whole bean coffee you buy from them in store, might be frowned upon bringing your own beans into the store to use their grinders.

These do a decent job of grinding the beans and ours is still working after many years. As mentioned by others and in the reviews, the hopper to black disc connection is a weak point and failed on our unit a couple of years ago. The grinder is still usable, but the hopper needs to be secured to the black disc via rubber bands, superglue, or some other means.

Even with the hopper connection design problem, this still produces consistent results, and is used daily at our house. Note that we make pour over coffee. I cannot comment on the quality of the espresso grind settings.

As an alternative, we have a manual hand crank type grinder, and that does a fine job as well - and that will be immune from the hopper separation issue.

If you want the best Entry level, aim for a Baratza encore grinder.

I have a similar, not identical, one. Price is right there with the low end, non-brand, imports. Beats a blade grinder. Don't count on grind selection. Be careful with rich, oily, beans. Very limited. Worth $30-$40, easily. Makes decent daily brew. I use a hand crank for French Press and cold brew. This type grinds too fine for them.

I've had this in the past. It's very loud. And didn't last long. Broke after about 2 years.

I've had mine for 9 years and no issues other than the loader coming loose so I superglued it. I highly reccomend this.

You can, and they are typically really good grinders. The problem is the coffee will oxidize within a day which makes buying whole beans completely irrelevant. You ought to just buy ground coffee if that sounds like something you'd want to do.

Mine easily makes a coarse grind. It is in fact too coarse for a French press on the coarsest setting.

New version is $10 more on Amazon. I don't know is new is better but wanted to point out.
That should fix the issue of the hopper fragility as you don't have to grab and turn it. Now the question is whether it is a deal at $40 or just better to spend $100-150 on a Capresso or Baratza.

I bought the equivalent model of this one a million years ago and it'd break up your driveway gravel if you asked it to.

This is NOT an equivalent. Two different grinders.

I disagree as you are attempting to solve a problem that doesn't exist while creating a new problem. That would eliminate the static discharge which might be favorable in a better grinder, but in this grinder that produces some fines, as I stated it is preferable to have them cling to the side to not be entered into brewing. Adding water would lower consitency. It is especially advantageous for a French press to not attempt to add water.

They could be saved to mix with cocoa for tiramisu, or just tossed out.

I think it is good to not only know about techniques, but also what they seek to accomplish. It would prevent the static cling that is benenficial in holding back the fines. Some people may like a less consistent grind in favor of having no static, and they can add water.
