Got back 4100ish points on 1 of 4 upcoming flights. Thanks!

For those new to Southwest, it's good to check your flights semi regularly for price changes regardless of sales. I usually try to check once a week.

I always laugh because finding a 39 dollar flight is like finding gold at the end of the rainbow

I'm sure there are some people who can take advantage of these promos but I never see anything close to their advertised pricing. Even for destinations that are 4-5 hours in drive time the cheapest flights are still right around $100 each way. Going anywhere decent ... closer to $150 each way minimum.

I rarely see any price changes with these promotions. Same frustration as combing the clearance aisles in Wal-Mart for a YMMV deal.

I have a flight booked during the promotion window, but I'm a noob at taking advantage of fare reductions. Do you have to cancel and rebook? What's the process?

If you buy a round trip now, can you cancel part of it later and keep a one way ticket?

I really wish there was an automated way to do this

I signed up for Tripit Pro last week which is supposed to do this. I never saw a notification today though of the fare reduction so not sure it works too well.

Not a chance. They're aware of this trick. If you cancel any part of it, it all gets canceled. If you don't take the return flight, they likely won't do anything (though they theoretically could charge you more, according to the terms you agreed to.) If you don't take the leaving flight, your return flight will be canceled, with no refund.

Based on the above "no show" policies mentioned, I always purchase 2 one-ways instead of RT. For SW only, have consistently found no savings associated with RT purchases vs OW. Do others of you do this? Am I missing out by not purchasing RT?

You are correct, no benefit in purchasing RT. Best to purchase 1 way and that makes it easier to modify on a price decrease and\or a change of plans.

Another trick is if you are purchasing for someone other than yourself (family or friend) it is best to use points. The points will come directly back to you if cancellation is needed however if you dollar purchase the funds remain in that individuals name.

This is the SW "fake sale after a real sale" week. Not too much to see around here unless you want to hop around Texas or Missouri, maybe somewhere from Baltimore too.

That's what I figured, thanks!

Exactly what I will be doing! My dates don't work well with their sale dates so I'll have to split the ticket and hope another sale comes up before my trip.
