You can still buy the RX 6800 which is cheaper and faster in most games, and has more VRAM. Also this specific card has been at this price for months.

MSRP is now $419 for the 7700 XT. Source [tomshardware.com]

You generally get a more-or-less linear increase in performance with your money on the AMD side. I'll definitely be waiting for a sale, but at MSRP, I think the new 7900 GRE makes more sense than the 7700 XT. You pay 25-30% more and get 25-30% better QHD performance, but the card is a lot more 4K capable (50%). If you can afford $420 for a 7700 XT, you can probably afford $550 for a 7900 GRE.

And of course, you've got RDNA4 coming in the fall, which should definitely be considered if you're talking about spending $400-500 on a graphics card. Hopefully you're thinking you'll keep it for a while.
