Either way turn off the Internet and ran McAfee full scan (it stays running at startup but didn't catch what was going on). Found nothing. Downloaded another AV and found nothing. Gave Malwarebytes a try and it found a few items including the files the hacker was using.
I keep Malwarebytes running all the time now.

It works well enough. A decade ago you could get a lifetime license and they still honor them. Which I have.
You can test it here: https://www.virustotal.
.exe files only, but you can see detection rate vs other venders.

Malwarebytes finds a lot of crap that others don't.

Most likely anyone ever getting infected will be through poor browsing habits. Clicking on things you shouldn't, downloading something or even being tricked on downloading from a site you think "is the right one." Internet browsing and email is the vector. Practice safe common sense habits and keep windows defender updated and you'll be good 99.9% of the time.
