I love train watching, I love trains! I hate to be a negative Nelly here.

I live near the Lorton station in Virginia. I see the long lines of folks waiting to get their car loaded, sit and wait, sit and wait, car line often so long it spills outside onto a local road causing traffic issues. Lorton station does have a nice waiting area building.

But beware auto-train is often late, part of reason is passenger trains giving the right of way to freight traffic on the journey. Read the reviews, only a 2.5 rating on TripAdvisor. My neighbor had a bad experience taking the auto train recently, not all food services rendered, got a small refund he was not happy with, wrote to Amtrak about it.

One reviewer said this: "I took the train in Coach from Lorton to VA in Jan and have a return trip planned in a few weeks. The only reason to take this train is to avoid driving. Don't take this train for "an experience" or for "dining options" or for "expediency". ""

But I do love trains! Nothing will derail me, I will stay on track with my hobby watching them and sometimes riding them. =|=|=|=|=|=|=
Do you want to let your car experience a train ride or not?
A compact SUV from Avis in Tampa is $355/week, or about $50/day. Even a compact is $260. I think you are living pre-2020 with your estimates.

Daytona and Sebring races Middle to end of February.
Good luck with rates then.

I realize AutoTrain is more for convenience, but the drive itself can be done in a reasonable single day for under $150 (assuming 20MPG and $3/gal for gas). At the cheapest, AutoTrain will be $270 for a single passenger + standard vehicle.

Maybe this is convenient for people who work remotely?

Not sure what you mean...most of the trains seem to depart Lorton at around 5pm and get in around 9am. It's meant to be an overnight service, not really during working hours.

Why do you have to have your own car instead of renting one in FL? The going rate is about $20/day. This makes no sense unless you're staying there for over 2 weeks.

The NOVA area traffic doesn't need any help from Amtrak, you're giving them way too much credit.

I'd agree. I used it once to move a car full of stuff to FL when my kid moved to go to school there. For a short vacation easier to just rent a car.

I like trains too but wasn't all that impressed with it. It was OK. Nothing that I'd really look forward to doing again.

It's weird you can't get off on any of the intermediate stops. Are there really that many people going from DC area to Orlando?

It's not so much DC-area people. Lorton is just the northern terminus. People headed to Orlando attractions drive from other areas north and west to load on there.

You want to wait around for them to unload cars at every stop?

When you add fees and everything it's a lot more than $20/day. I'm in orlando now and the cheapest car I could find after taxes fees and insurance was $360 for 7 days. Flights for 5 of us from New York totaled $700, so $1,060 total. This deal would have definitely saved us money.
