Emotiva BasX MR1L 9.2 Channel Dolby Atmos® & DTS:X™ Cinema Receiver [emotiva.com] ($1200 + Free Shipping), regular price is $1599. Apply code EMOBOWL24 at checkout (exp 2/12).

Also available is the BasX MR1 11.2 Channel Dolby Atmos® & DTS:X™ Cinema Receiver [emotiva.com] for $1400 vs regular price of $1999

These receivers have balanced XLR outs for subwoofers, which is a plus especially when you have long cable runs to your subs. Further their rated power per channel all driven is higher than other receivers in the market. They also have 13 channels of external amplification

Here's couple of good videos on what's inside of them and gives you an idea on their build quality

Agree, emotiva's primary focus is on music and movies, hence those looking for 2.1 for games will be disappointed. Their build quality however is supreme, in comparison to many other top players in the market. Know that for this price, you are getting 13 channels ready for external amplification, only 9 are internal. Also, I don't know many receivers offering XLR sub outs, not even the Yamaha Aventage line. Personally feel $1200 is an awesome price for purists looking to buy an all metal chassis quality processor.
Emotiva's XPA amplifiers represent really good value for the quality and price. They are built in the U.S. as well.

A couple of things to consider with these receivers: Emotiva's firmware tends to be buggy which is why I stay away from their processors. In addition, these receivers use their proprietary EmoQ room correction - no Dirac or Audyssey available.

XLR connectors are only a differentiator if you
are picking up noise with an RCA connector. They don't improve sound quality.

I do own a couple of XPA gen 3 amplifiers and have been very happy with them. I use them with a Denon x4300h and x3500h as processors. Both these receivers have Audyssey XT32.

For this?
You wouldn't need one, the power on this is top notch.

Two channel stereo would barely break a sweat.
I would be willing to bet even with all 9 channels driven, you still wouldn't lose any performance.

If you are just looking for an amplifier and dont need all the other features check out buckeye amplifiers. They are the best price you can find on the latest amplifier tech. They can push anything you have with relative ease and its a small business whose goal was to provide the best amplifiers for a great price. They are very much no frills.

After a half hr long conversation on the phone with emotiva support clarifying my questions, went ahead and purchased the mr1l to replace my marantz. I liked their in person approach and attention given to customers compared to the bigger players. So inspite of some things that's yet to be in mr1, I liked the agenda free and honest conversation and decided to give it a try given that the mr1s/mr1ls are expected to sound awesome with some tlc. When they incorporate hdmi 2.1 after another year, I will have an opportunity to trade this in and upgrade to the new model at that time by paying any difference in cost.

are you for real, America only assembles things if the parts are not from China, Taiwan, or other Asian countries most audio-video lovers would not be able to own equipment or almost anything for that matter Smilie

Depends what you use to compare.
Channel processing you're looking at SR8015 or wait for the Cinema 30.

Power wise this is just below those two but may not be by much depending on your setup.
It would easily compete with the Cinema 40 imo.

As others have pointed out it lags with the other features especially RC imo.
So I got my MR1L delivered yesterday, and set it up. Here's my first person feedback after one day of using it. Wanted to post it here, since the coupon code might expire soon and those who wanna grab it can do so before it does.
  • I did not have any trouble at all with room correction setup, Auto EmoQ was a breeze, except that in the first round it did not detect subwoofers. Ran it again and everything went fine. No clue why so many people reporting otherwise. Ofcourse I never had any glitches with Audyssey, but having to run Auto EmoQ a second time was not an annoyance for me.
  • The sound quality is amazing, it is definitely better than my marantz sr6011, although not by a huge deal. Know that I am only a day old with the MR1L, but I can already hear things I did not with my marantz, and guess what it is cheaper than a marantz cinema 40 by a huge difference.
  • It takes time to boot and detect the source signal, but not a big deal for me as the projector also takes a bit of time to warm up.
  • I tried it in its native 9 channel config first, and hooked it up with my emotiva xpa gen 3 amp later-yet to check out how it sounds today(adding a pic of them stacked). Both times EmoQ did not give me any trouble
  • The UI and text definitely looks boring and needs improvement, it is thin fonted out of the box and hard to see when you have a light image already in the background. The MR1L display panel text font can also be improved, but these are all minor inconveniences, however both of these can be a turn off for those who care for it.
  • Has great symmetry of design, and looks much better than any receiver in the market, but that is subjective. For my situation it looks even better with my emotiva xpa amp sitting right beneath it on the rack. No one eyed monsters, or carbon fiber complications(personally don't like the looks of the Yamaha Aventage or the Marantz cinema series compared to this, love the erstwhile Marantz face plates better)
  • The individual channel volume trims on the remote is a convenience, although it is just a trim. Yet to play with the remote a lot, but it is just plastic and looks okay, nothing fancy compared to a marantz one.
  • I have yet to hear any clicks or hisses, when increasing the volume or switching sources, that some others complain of.
  • Overall setup in my experience was a breeze, I consider it a definite value for money except for those who really need hdmi 2.1 right now. Those who are on the fence, grab it before the deal runs out.

Thanks for the impression and hopefully Emotiva finally did something about the issues.
I know the friend that had it regretted doing updates, hopefully they fixed that also.

I agree sound signature and aesthetics are personal choices, no debate there.

Power wise not surprised it kept up with your Cinema 40.
These power spec debates always get overblown! Good example on having it and needing it isn't always a benefit.

What were the 9 speakers they were driving? How many subs?
I assume this was average/normal listening levels, much/any change going higher/louder?

RC wise, with the Cinema 40 did you use Audyssey or Dirac?
If Audyssey did use the Editor App? Standard or Directional?
If Dirac, just DL or both DL and DLBC?
How much adjusts did you do on both(XT32/Dirac,EmoQ)?

Interesting perspective from someone who actually owns the equipment.

Honestly, I am not that surprised by your preference over the Marantz

Coming from a Marantz prepro to an Arcam pre pro, the Arcam was far more musical and Dirac( in my listening environment) sounds much better than Audyseey did in every way

I watched Mission Impossible Dead Reckoning today after completing full set up. Loving every bit of the MR1L. So far, I am sold! Sounds much fuller and better than my Marantz!
I do not have the cinema 40, I own an older 9 channel Marantz(SR6011) which I was using in the same config as this (Emotiva amp supplying power to the additional channels). I have been thinking of upgrading to Cinema 40, although I did not like the carbon fiber finish much. That's when this emotiva deal came up. So my comparison is between the SR6011 and this, with the assumption that the sound signature may not have changed in general between the 6011 and cinema 40 by much of a margin.

As of yesterday when I gave this feeback, I was driving 4 ceiling speakers and 5 floor speakers all from the MR1L. Today I switched all floor channels (7 including side surrounds) to my emotiva XPA gen 3, leaving only the ceiling duty to the MR1L processing. The sound quality remains the same and as good, and neutral. I personally feel it offers much more detail compared to the marantz. Further, the marantz SR6011 was already not fatiguing at higher volumes (compared to my Denon X3200W), and this even lesser.
With my marantz I used standard Audyssey room correction, not the editor app. With the EmoQ, I did not do any adjustments yet other than what the system automatically did. So far, have not felt the need to do any tweaking yet. Just a reminder I am on day two of owing the MR1L. Also know that, mine is a rectangular room that is close to ideal specs with good amount of furniture, carpeting and some DIY absorption with curtains, paintings and such. This could be why the EmoQ RC probably didn't have to struggle much to make it sound good. I have two subwoofers, one 12 inch and one 16 inch both from monoprice. (Also, have another 12 incher on standby if needed). Hope this helps.

As of today, I will DEFINITELY recommend the MR1Lreceiver to anyone looking to buy. Totally blown away!

I have tried a Marantz Av7705 prepro before with the same emotiva amp. Honestly I did not find much improvement over the SR6011, except maybe a negligible amount of improvement in channel separation, compared to the SR6011. Felt it was not worth the price difference, so I sold the AV7705 and kept the SR6011.

Oh sorry thought you compared it to the 40.

I was going based on having set this up and a 40 & 50.

The editor app adds significant versatility to XT32, worth its weight in gold imo.
Another thing you get with 40/50, directional integration, which is based on the same theory behind DLBC/Trinnov.

It also gives you the option to both Dirac RCs in case you're not content with Audyssey which is comparable(if you know what you're doing).

I would say if you use any external amps there is no real difference between the 40 and the 50.

You never mentioned what speakers you were driving?
