About this movie:
  • Director: James Cameron
  • Summary: 57 years after Ellen Ripley had a close encounter with the reptilian alien creature from the first movie, she is called back, this time, to help a group of highly trained colonial marines fight off against the sinister extraterrestrials. But this time, the aliens have taken over a space colony on the moon LV-426. When the colonial marines are called upon to search the deserted space colony, they later find out that they are up against more than what they bargained for. Using specially modified machine guns and enough firepower, it's either fight or die as the space marines battle against the aliens. As the Marines do their best to defend themselves, Ripley must attempt to protect a young girl who is the sole survivor of the nearly wiped out space colony.

Back in the day, had the $150 deluxe laserdisc Constant Angular Velocity version; each side was under 30 minutes and had to flip/change disks every time it ended. It was absolutely the best laserdisc we owned.

Amazing that for $5 we now have a MUCH higher quality and I no longer have to flip laser discs!
Game over, man! Game over!

RIP Bill Paxton
I can confirm with Vudu you do get both versions, but the Special Edition is under Extras, not as a separate movie.

Just purchased the VUDU version Theatrical, and what others have confirmed, if you go to the extras, the Special Addition is there with 4K/DV and Atmos.

For 5 dollars? Yup. I've been reading on the forums for a couple months on how bad/weird this transfer is, so i went in with low expectations.

Watched first 20 minutes and really, I expected it to be worse. Yeah it's a bit degrained, looks a bit too clean, but overall, 5 dollars SE, 4K and a good Atmos track. I really can't complain.

Recommend.
Yeah same here. At first the special edition would only play in SD or HDX (1080p). But after closing the app out, the UHD/4K version showed up.

less fortunate news:
it seems like they DNR'ed the shit outta this movie. just like Terminator 2 (which ironically is also a James Cameron film).

You actually had to flip laserdiscs, like a record? How... quant.
If you had a better laserdisc player it would flip itself but stuff like the Criterion laserdiscs would only hold like 30 minutes per side so you would have to change discs every hour of the movie. I think the Seven laserdisc set I have is like 8 or 10 discs with all the extras so it was a lot of disc changes. Laserdiscs used to do some cool stuff though kind of like records are doing know as I have a Blood Red edition of Evil Dead 2 on laserdisc.

It was something else.
The CLV or "less fancy" ones lasted 60 minutes; the CAV or "more fancy ones" lasted 30 minutes, and let you still see the picture when you paused it or ff/rw;

at some point, my dad bought an ultra fancy machine which flipped the disks for you; no clue what he paid for it!

Picture got to 425 lines (not even 480!)

The Constant Linear Velocity (CLV) disks were the standard 60 minute disks; the fancy ones were constant angular velocity (CAV) that let you pause the picture as well as see scenes as you fast forward and rewind.

I particularly remember the aliens pausing it after bishop is cut in half and trying to hold onto something, you can see the hole that the actor was standing in- resolution wasn't good enough to see that previously, and I was blown away.

Amazing Prime Video has 3 versions of 'Aliens' each for $5: (1) 'Aliens' (Theatrical Cut), (2) 'Aliens: Special Edition (Director's Cut)', and (3) 'Aliens (Includes Bonus Content)' which has both the theatrical cut + director's cut running back-to-back, followed by a short making of documentary.

"I like to keep this handy, for close encounters." - Corporal Hicks
Corporal Hicks to Ripley:

Hicks : Here. I want you to put this on.

Ripley : What's it for?

Hicks : It's a locator. Then I can find you anywhere in the complex on this. It's just a precaution.

Ripley : Thanks.

Hicks : Doesn't mean we're engaged or anything. All right, what's next?
