Download vs online tax software comparison [thefinancebuff.com]
- Download Deluxe supports nearly everything that Premiere does, including investments, real estate, self-employment, etc. The marketing from Intuit is confusing here.
- When using download/desktop software, your data stays local, which is probably more secure (but make sure you have a backup!)
- Download includes 5 federal e-files and virtually unlimited printed returns.
- Downloaded state software allows preparation of state tax forms, but state e-file is an additional $20 per state. You can print and mail for virtually nothing. It is $40 to download the software for each additional state.
- Some states [thefinancebuff.com] allow free e-file on their dept of revenue website
- Online allows you to work from any device
- Online stores a copy of your tax return in the cloud for archival purposes and also next year's taxes

New this year - TurboTax licenses are tied to your Intuit account, making it a bit harder to share. You still can install on 5 PCs if you use the same Intuit account on each.

Some free options to try first...

1: FreeTaxUSA
(100% free for AGI $45,000 or less through FreeFile, Federal + State)
(no income limit, free federal, $15 for state)
https://www.freetaxusa.com/

2: Cash App Taxes (Formally Credit Karma Tax)
(no income limit, free federal and free state)
https://cash.app/taxes

3: OnlineTaxes (OLT.com)
(100% free for AGI $45,000 or less through FreeFile)
(no income limit, free federal, $10 state)
https://olt.com/main/home/default.asp

4: MyFreeTaxes
https://myfreetaxes.com/

5: IRS Free File: Do your Taxes for Free (for AGI $79,000 or less)
https://www.irs.gov/filing/free-f...s-for-free
https://irs.treasury.gov/freetaxprep/

6. New Pilot for 2024: IRS Direct File
only supported in some states, limited functionality for this pilot
https://directfile.irs.gov/

7. IRS Free Fillable Forms
(no income limit, federal only, not full featured software)
https://www.irs.gov/e-file-provid...able-forms

One major advantage of H&R Block & TurboTax, download or online, is that they support importing 1099 forms from banks and brokerages. While this is definitely useful and can save some time, you often have to enter your passwords in their software, which some people are not comfortable with. With 1099 investment income, you can often enter aggregate data [hrblock.com] and not list each trade individually, which makes this much less painful that you might think.

Privacy concerns
Tax prep companies are required by law to get your consent before they can share your personal information with 3rd parties. If you are concerned about this, I recommend reading the privacy policies and/or license agreements from each company. Of course, you can avoid this issue altogether by using downloaded desktop software where your data stays on your local computer only.
IRS FAQs Related to Strengthened Taxpayer Control over Tax Information [irs.gov]
"The general rule expressed in both the 1974 regulation and the 2007 regulation is that taxpayers – not the government - control their tax information. No tax information can be disclosed or used without taxpayer consent."

FreeTaxUSA Terms of Use [freetaxusa.com] "We do not and will not sell your information to third parties."
OLT.com privacy policy [olt.com] "Specifically, we do not share, sell or rent your Personal Information to third-party advertisers, "spammers", or anyone else who we know will use it for their own advertising or marketing purposes."
Cash App Taxes Privacy Policy [cash.app] - This one is a little more vague, read it carefully.

H&R Block and TurboTax online DO sell your personal information with your consent...but you can opt-out. See here [washingtonpost.com] for more details. Their free versions are quite limited and they also use deceptive marketing practices to try to upsell you to more expensive products. Both have been in trouble with the FTC for their deceptive marketing tactics.

Deluxe download handles rentals and investments just fine, despite the deceptive marketing. If you read carefully, it says "more guidance" for those things, but even that has not been verified by actual users.

I do not have rental income but I think that TT Deluxe handles schedule E. It might not have as much interview aid as Premier, if that's needed.
If you are relying on what the TT web site says, you are likely being misled.

Go to b&m store.
Recycle an electronic (cord, cheap thing from a thrift store, etc).
Get $10 off 30 coupon on recycle receipt.
Take activation code card for TurboTax to register.
Price match to Amazon price $65.
Use $10 off $30 coupon.
Pay the rest with Staples Rewards from ink recycling.

Did this a couple of months ago.

ETA:
$64.99 has been the going price on Amazon from Dec-Feb. I bought in Jan and then again in Feb for family members. Looks like Amazon has increased the price since the yearly deadline is coming up. Maybe a better strategy for next year.

Will appreciate if someone can DM the code if you're not using it. I can send a $5 off in store coupon in return. Thank you!

I have a $25 off $150 code that I can share with anyone who is interested.

Sorry, I need a reality/sense check: Longtime user, CD version, already have an Intuit account. I know there's new security requirements this year. But do I now need to login to my account first before I can even access by tax files? That's what I encountered today. Wasn't expecting that at all.

I imported the previous year and created the current year file a few weeks back. Now, when I'm ready to start inputting data, there's not the usual list of available returns (I have two to do) until I login to my Intuit account first. Actually I had to manually point to the tax file (File, Open), there was no list of returns in TT itself. Is that the new process flow. What if I want to work on it offline or lose/forget my PW, etc? Doesn't make sense to me. Am I'm missing something, I think I must be? Very rattled.

After you activate your license, you don't need to use the intuit account any more and no tax information is stored online for the cd/download version.

Okay, I opened without logging in.

I activated back in Jan when I was doing the initial install, imported previous year and stopped after I verifed the personal information for each return (2). Where I'm getting thrown off is the list of returns doesn't show within TT today. I have to manually point to them. I skip the initial registration screen (address, etc) like I always do every year, then I get the screen offering to use the Online version or Begin. Begin takes me to creating a new return but I'm expected to see the two returns I created after the previous importing. So this is where I'm seeing something unexpected. I can go and do the manual File, Open but as I said, it's not normal. I guess I'm able to proceed, but it's different so I'm just a bit alarmed.
I'm guessing TT's not remembering the path to my returns. I can't remember if I accepted the default in the past and then moved them after completion or not. That may be the hiccup since I moved them at the start this year? Seems like it should retain it once I selected it though.

*Okay, problem/mystery solved: Apparently, just importing previous year's data, which is as far as I went after I installed TT, isn't enough for TT to acknowledge as a new return. Now that I've entered and saved with actual 2023 data the expected return is now showing within TT. Pearl clutching...disengaged.
