What happens after one year? Is it just that there are no further updates — or do some features like auto download of data stop working — or does the whole program stop working? I have Quicken 2014 that seems to do everything I need but I wouldn't mind updating as long as I don't have to update every year.

When the subscription runs out Quicken will still work except for the "connected services", i.e., you won't be able to download and update accounts online. Here's what it says when I go to update my sub:
"In order to not lose your connected services, you need to resume your subscription."
I assume that also means no program updates. I don't know if there's any other loss of functionality.

If you're manually entering your data/transactions into 2014 then there may not be any advantage to upgrading.

Thank you for taking the time to explain. I don't know how much difference there can possibly be in different versions of Quicken since it is basically just a simple check book balancing program. I think my 2014 version will download data but I don't use it because my little local bank isn't (or at least in the past wasn't) part of the Quicken network. I don't see much value to downloading credit card info except to generate reports —which my 2 principal cards do anyway.

Renewal extensions only work when you have less than 6 months left until expiration, I've read.
