"The guilty one is not he who commits the sin, but he who causes the darkness."

"So long as ignorance and poverty exist on earth, books of the nature of Les Misérables cannot fail to be of use," says Victor Hugo in the preface of his famous novel. Set in the years after the French Revolution, Les Misérables is certainly French history recounted through the personal stories of its main characters: Jean Valjean, Fantine, Cosette, Javert, and others. And the novel offers philosophical insight on the good deeds that can happen even amidst ignorance and poverty.

Les Misérables is a French historical novel by Victor Hugo, first published in 1862, that is considered one of the greatest novels of the 19th century. Les Misérables has been popularized through numerous adaptations for film, television and the stage, including a musical.

The translation can make a huge difference on the reading experience. Most public domain translations can be out of touch for a modern audience.

This particular one stands just shy of 1.7k pgs, which is more than 5x the French version [amazon.com] (also free to buy atm) that hovers just at 300. If anyone wants a shorter read go with the French copy and have it translated (there are tutorials online...search "How to convert KindIe ebook to pdf" for example).
