What exactly happens when you "Follow" a user?

Hi all,
I've been on this site for a while, but I'm just trying to explore features that I hardly use. What exactly happens if I follow a user?
Do I get notifications whenever they post? Do I get deal alert notifications? Since the individual is already my friend, I can already check out their profile which shows me an "Activity Stream" and I can also easily check out their post history from here.
So I'm just trying to understand what benefit the follow feature actually provides?
Thanks to all who are more familiar with this and can give me a bit of guidance!

If you follow someone, you will get notifications for their threads. It is similar to how deal alerts work, but you won't get a push notification on the app (if you use it).
While you can just check the profile of anyone that you are interested in, following them saves you that step - you won't have to remember to look every day, it'll just pop up (and/or PM or email you) whenever they post.
You can check this page https://slickdeals.net/forums/following.php to see the list of people that you have followed and individually edit the type of notification that you'd like to receive.
That's exactly the information that I was looking for. I appreciate the link and details. I will try this feature out and see how I like it.
