I would save your miles for long haul international flights because they have exploded in price, making awards on those flights much more valuable.
Too bad they do not have a better system in place vs randomly trying city to city on various days.

Hate to sound ungrateful, and obviously there are deals out there to be had - but, it's just not worth the effort of trying to shuffle through all of this to hope you stumble on to something.
Not true.... I am not the biggest fan of AA miles but they do not expire within a year...

From their FAQ:
Just earn or redeem miles on American or with an AAdvantage® partner at least once every 24 months. We'll automatically extend your mileage expiration date 24 months from the date of your most recent qualifying activity.

So as long as you are flying, or if you are earning miles (i assume with a AA card as well that you buy some snacks at the store with once every year or two would work)

$50 tax that sucks
Tax is imposed by governments, not AA. You either pay the tax along with your cash ticket, or on top of your award flight. There's no avoiding taxes.

Advantage miles are useless. They only last 1 year. You will lose them if you don't use within a year.
As others have said they only expire if you don't fly or earn miles via an AA card or buy something from AA. I've been building my AA miles via CC purchases (up to 320,000 now) to try and get some international tickets for the whole fam in the future. Probably need a half mil..... Ughhh

Bos to Taipei is expensive. 5,000 miles+$11 fees BOS to SFO and $490 SFO to TPE (United) works out great for me. I will have a mini vacation in Bay Area.

I had pretty much given up on my AA miles. They've screwed up the program so bad. I have about 50k miles, but I can never figure out how to get a decent deal on them. Maybe I'll get lucky -- no reason to hold miles these days, they hold their value as well as the Argentinean peso.
I can give you $500 transfer it to me

I literally explained it multiple times in posts on here. It is not complicated to get a good deal. You can fly to Japan in economy for 35k miles. Tons of availability if you look outside summer and December. You can fly to London for 30k.

Yep, can also use the Advantage Shopping portal online or do one of the surveys to earn miles to extend the expiration

I have gotten some very good value of 1.5-3.5 per miles on domestic tickets. If you book early you can get very good value. The best value i get out of these is booking very early on tentative travel since i can cancel and get everything back. I wish i had more AA miles for booking tentative travels.

I have booked for tentative vacation during school winter and spring break when ticket sky rocket. For example booked BOS - SAN for 6000 miles. These tickets are going to go for $300-$400 by the time i have final plan. Similarly booked for PHX for 7000 miles.

Is there an primer on how reward points/miles work with credit cards and all the transferring to other cards, etc ? Any particular website to explain all this? I need a good primer for beginners that gets into details. Thanks.

I thought it would be a great time to fly there in December since many American tourists are at home celebrating Xmas, thus the airlines would have plenty of seats available and it seems to be dead during that month. No thanks to London. Didn't hear many good things about that city worth visiting and certainly not for food.

Crazy airline nonsense. I live reasonably close to PHL and looked at flying to Key West. That is 16k points one way. If I start out at Lanscaster or Leigh Valley and take a "luxury bus" to PHL it is only 9k points.

I use "AAdvantage EShopping" and my AA card to maintain AA miles and "Rewards for Opinions" to maintain SouthWest miles. They will never expire so long as you are active. I fly Delta often enough to maintain those miles.
Southwest miles don't expire
