Don't be ridiculous. This is a proper fishing setup that can catch proper sized fish not a toy fishing rod/reel.

I personally have a 75 Pound Bluefin tuna that was caught in Ensenada on a TLD25 combo just like this (65lb powerpro and 50lb Berkley big game mono). We were targeting Bonito but just happened to hook up to a bluefin tuna unexpectedly and while it was a long-ish battle the reel and rod handled it just fine. Not to mention we have caught countless Bonito and California Yellow Tail on the same setup. While I have much nicer setups now like Talicas and Makaira reels for trolling but we always fall back to the TLD25 when we have new fishermen on the boat with us since risking a $1,000+ setup with a newbie isn't a great idea.

Only downside on the TLD series is the shorter handle so I upgraded mine with the longer handles sold online, otherwise they are solid entry level light trolling or live bait reels. They are NOT tuna reels but will certainly handle most gamefish.

It's a medium heavy outfit. Braid is typically rated lower than is actual breaking strength, so unless you're fishing for makos you should be ok here.

Great deal! Hard to beat a Shimano TLD. I've had a TLD 15 for decades and it's still going strong. I grabbed the 25. I'll probably put 50 - 60 lb mono on it. I don't like braid on conventional reels. A backlash can mean having to strip all the line off. Mono is much easier to untangle.

Have you tried some of the casting braid? No memory is real nice for casting

The TLD series is a great budget option for people. It's solid but the drag isn't as great as the Speedmaster 2 for instance. The guys from Fishermans Landing in San Diego suggest the Shimano Talica and Speedmaster 2's for long range fishing. If you're just fishing for fun and don't get out that often, then this is a pretty great price for the TLDs.

Do y'all think this will work for a kingfish pier setup? I was thinking of using this as the main setup, and my 12 ft Penn as my anchor rod.

No, but I'll look into it. I mostly use conventional reels like this saltwater for trolling and bottom fishing for snapper. Trolling doesn't generally cause a problem, but dropping a heavy sinker straight down deep can cause a backlash if you aren't paying attention and let the spool gets ahead of the line.

This would work except you really wouldn't be able to cast this very easily. You could use a float/bobber and let the current take the bait out, but you can do that with a spinning rod too, and that's a lot easier to cast.

I'd get it anyway. 12 ft rod is more suitable for surf fishing and trying to land some sharks. You'll be able to cast with a conventional reel, but it takes tons of practice. For pier fishing you probably don't want anything more than 9 ft long and the easiest to use is a spinning rod. Got to be mindful of people around you of course. Although it can work, it's best to not get into tight situations with plenty of other ppl that could be on a pier.

Thank you for the advice! I guess for the price it won't hurt to get it.
