The biggest difference is Bowflex feels more like a traditional dumbbell but they're always wide and bulky no matter what the weight. The powerblocks aren't as wide and bulky but are literally in a cinderblock like shape. They're more durable but still should drop them.
Finally bit the bullet and ordered a 90lb set with the stand and will be putting my octabells on the marketplace probably at a loss.
Looking to upgrade the handle to a knurled setup also
I missed the large compact stand last time so I'm glad to be able to grab it now.
anyone who's serious about home workouts and if you got the budget, I'd pull on the stage 2 and stage 3, as you'll save in the long run as you'll have to wait until your compatible stage models are back on sale. you'll save about $40-70 per stage so worth it if I were to do it again.
for reference, after about 4 months of consistent training (4-5x a week) and rehab after a back injury at home, I went from a 35lb flat DB bench press to 70lbs and 15lb to 55lb single DB rows (4x8s).
I also got the stand later on, I'd highly recommend so you don't have to do a small deadlift every time you rerack after a set. tremendously helped my lower back.

I didn't get it but that's because I am a cheapo.
So when I use these I either have them on the cement basement floor or on the bench. For you to be able to switch the weights, I think they have to be on a hard surface, because when I try to do it on the bench or carpet, the plastic insert thingy doesn't go into the hole when you try to push it in. You can sort of get past this by pushing down on the dumbbell very hard, but it gets tedious.
So I have the full 90 lbs on the basement floor. It gets tedious bending down to change the weights and also picking up the weights, but if you are in shape, it shouldn't be a problem.
Just this morning with my PBs. Never had a problem.
Hmmmm, I'm really tempted by these stage 2's. I've been training with the non expandable Powerblocks https://sport.woot.com/offers/pow...ner-set-25 consistently since October and I'm almost at using the max of 50 for incline presses and rows. I picked them up during the pandemic for $239 through WOOT knowing they were not upgradeable and they've been good for me, along with some kettlebells, resistance bands, a pull up bar, and a a dip bar. Honestly though, I've been considering going back to an actual gym again for the better variety of equipment and being around people, but I'm extremely Covid cautious and would be wearing a mask (haven't had Covid yet, knock on wood), so maybe switching to these would be better. I can probably sell the old ones on FB Marketplace or something? I'm also realizing I have some muscle imbalances that I've allowed to get worse as I've aged, so maybe emphasizing more lat training I wouldn't need to jump up in weight just for heavier pec work. I wonder how much more use I could get out of the non-expandable versions.
Think AFV where kids bump and fall and never ever get hurt.

I have it. It works just fine. Also put in some magnets for the weight cylinder "adder" weights.
