Ludicrous.
It's ludicrous that people can justify spending $12 on something as cheap and simple as a burger when there's burgers that are 90% as good for 20% of the cost.
It's simple math. For $12 you can buy 3 POUNDS of ground beef or more and you're getting 8oz of beef from Shake Shack double burger. That's the same as paying $24 for 1 POUND of ground beef. Would you pay $24 for a pound of ground beef form the grocery store?
The amount of money people justify spending on frivolous things is shocking.

I would never hit up Shake Shack at full price, however.

You'll need to also get: package of hamburger buns (because you can't just buy 1 single bun), a head of lettuce, tomato, jar of pickles, ketchup, and throw in some napkins while you're at it. Add everything up, including your time to prep and cleanup, and you'd be much closer to $12 for 1 hamburger than you think.
Need to make 2, 4, or 8 hamburgers? Now, the economies of scale start working more in your favor. But that's a different story.
And also, I'd argue that a Dave's Single (or Double) at Wendy's is closer to a Shake Shake burger, not the crap on the value menu. The regular price in my area is $6.79 for a Single (or $7.89 for the Double), which is closer to 55-65% of the cost of the Shake Shack double. So is it 1.5 to 2 times better than Wendy's? Now that's more debatable.
At the end of the day, if you don't find value in a $12 hamburger, no one should tell you otherwise. But unfortunately, these days it's not all that ludicrous or shocking.

Also, complaining that products that people prepare for you in restaurants (fast food or otherwise) are actually more expensive than buying the ingredients yourself is so ludicrous that it must be trolling. Try again.
Also, my pleasure is not frivolous. If you're shocked that people spend money on the things that give them pleasure, then you're wildly out of touch - or sadly, again, trolling.
My original question was these types of free burgers/sandwiches by spending $10+ happens every month?

Answer to your second question is no. Lately it has been because of these new korean burger releases though.
