If you have a 24GB card, just download koboldcpp which is a 250mb exec, and get a GGUF model off huggingface -- a 20B or 34B model is about 15GB, then run it. Total time, including installing card and drivers ~1hr.

Check out /r/localllama on reddit.
This card is great if you want to play with local language models. Tired of GPT refusing to answer your questions about how to dispose of that dead body in your freezer? Run your own local model that has been 'un-aligned' and it will let you know exactly which brand of acid to get at the hardware store to remove that pesky problem. All you need a boatload of VRAM to run it.
It's a great card. But for gamers, seems 4070 ti super with 3 years of warranty is a better choice.

How much crypto can this thing mine and how quickly would it pay for itself (before power usage calculations)?

<---mining noob here

I've read mining is close to dead or bitcoins are all but gone the way of the 🦤 Dodo. This is a decent deal, if you need a good card right now. At this stage though, I'd get a 40 series card instead because they run more efficiently and cooler, plus it uses AI to aid in processing, which theoretically takes a load off the GPU. In my opinion, you're better off passing on this and get a 40 series and get a better warranty along with it. Plus it's future proof.

Microcenter is selling it for $700 but they likely acquired it for $500-$600 then paid someone to take it apart and refurbish it. If I owned a mint 3090, I could sell it for a way better price on ebay. Refurb is a market for lemons.
bold of you to assume they took it apart?

Have anyone used this or another other GPU in an external thunderbolt enclosure, and for AI/LLM ?

I have a Razer TB3 enclosure, which I am considering installing a 3090/7900xtx on and use for AI for my laptop with TB3. (rather than in a PC directly) I want something more portable.

Curious to learn vicariously from that experience so I can either proceed or avoid doing.
Last time I tried to use the Razer enclosure on my Mac(around 2020), it only worked with AMD card, and could not get it to work with my NVDIA card.
If you manage to get this to work, please also keep in mind the limitation of the hardware. Thunderbolt 3 has bandwidth of 5GB/s, while PCIE 3.0 16x has 16GB/s. Bandwidth may or may not matter to your workflow, depending on how often you transfer data between CPU & GPU.

I was able to get an MSI SUPRIM 3090 with 1 year Allstate warranty off eBay for this price about 6 months ago. Seller had 20 of them and a bunch of whatever MSI's other 3090 model is. I bought for genAI lab at home. Had no idea what condition to expect (listing said something like "like new, original box").

It came in the original box and had all of the original packaging and bonuses (mousepad, support bracket, etc.). There is a TINY bend on one of the heatsink fins, but it otherwise looked like it had never been used. I have had no issues with it at all. I assume these were MSI refurbs sold through a third-party.

No idea what the story about these MicroCenter ones is, but MicroCenter does have a 30 day return policy, so the risk is low. You may have a similar experience as I have had with my refurb.

Very happy with the 3090 overall.

"Includes 90-day parts & labor vendor warranty."

Only 90 days? Not worth it.

Mining is dead, that's why graphics cards are easy to get.

Mining isn't really dead, it's kinda semi-alive using CPUs and not GPUs.

24gb is important if you want to load your windows 11 onto the ram so it loads your games faster. the windows 11 installed takes about 10-12gb, so you'll have 12GB of ram leftover for your games
Lol! What??!!!

Why would anyone even consider 30xx cards when 50xx cards are supposed to come out at the end of this year? These things should be selling dirt cheap within a year from now due to obsolescence.

I ordered this online yesterday and drove 1h one way today to pick it up from Tustin, CA. The manager said that they were told not to sell these as they are missing a cable. I tried to convince him to sell it to me anyway, but not luck. I recommend calling the store before you drive to pick it up.
