August is hottest month in Japan. I would avoid going there that time of the year.
San Jose and LAX are far away from eachother.. San Jose is an alternative to SFO and Oakland
Flew with them last year. IMO, if you have limited luggage it's fine but they nickel and dime you on everything else

is San Jose like the alternative airport for LAX? See it more frequently and with international flights too.

Second that, if you take humidity really bad, August is the worst time to go...

I pay 400 round trip last year. The planes are fine and purchase the extra 100 for luggage and meal. Everything you can order through the screen. Wifi is free. Seats are thin but I had my own cushion. Everything else is perfect

I go there every spring and fall for business purposes and it's always fun to go outside of toyko and explore other prefectures. I was lost once and barely found my way back to the airport to leave japan.

At this price point you'll be better off buying United from SFO and have one carry on and two check bags included for $970 per person. And water and food served.

For a date in August? Nonstop? I don't think United has anything under $1k.

Random date chosen Aug12-22, Zipair with one carryon and one checked bag (+seat selection and meal) comes to $938 nonstop.

Even if the price of United is similar when you add the cost of seat reservation, checked luggage and meals for Zipair, I would still take Zipair as my experience flying United last year was worse than my return flight on Zipair. Yes, you'll have to add about ~$100-$150 to get similar amenities on Zipair, but the overall experience (and food) was better on Zipair.

You need to take advantage of buying bento boxes and bottled drinks in Tokyo to take onboard with you for the flight back. Also, pay the extra ~$11 for access to the lounge before your flight.

You just have to plan to add the cost of seat reservation and checked luggage (if you need it) and meal--or you'll need to travel very lightly, and be careful about weighing your luggage (both carry-on and checked).

Now, if it was the same price on Singapore Airlines, I'd consider taking that instead.

That's a good point. For that period (end of August/September), the cheapest United flights from the Bay Area are about $1400 RT (Star Alliance on AIr Canada is about $1100, as well as EVA AIr). Zipair adds about $160 total for seat reservations, meal and checked baggage making the total about $840 RT.

EDIT: Flights on Air Canada or EVA have 1 or 2 stops which makes the flights about 24-33 hours versus about 11 hours for a non-stop.

An even better deal is to get the lie-flat seats on Zipair which come to about $2100 even after you add on the seat reservation, checked luggage and meal).

In comparison, the cheapest Star Alliance business class seat (on Air Canada) is about $5000.

Having flown both, I completely disagree. Service, food quality and plane were all better on ZipAir. Even if prices were equal, I'd choose ZipAir every time.

As an aside, I would highly advise against traveling in Japan with two checked bags + a carry on per person. It's a place where you rely heavily on public transport (trains/buses) to get around. We're a family of 5, and every time we go to Japan, we go with 1 checked suitcase + 1 carry-on size backpack for each adult, and 1 roller suitcase (carryon) + 1 small backpack (personal item) per kid. Even this arrangement is a bit annoying on trains and at stations. But this means that we really only need to pay for 2 checked bags for the entire family on the way there, and maybe a 3rd on the way home, if we bring back a lot of souvenirs.

I flew with them this Feb from LAX. I paid $430 which was a killer deal and it was good for the money. No water, no food, nothing on the flight but I came prepared with a couple of sandwiches and some fruit. They did weigh my carry on at LAX but I was under 15 pounds. It's a great value if you can find it for $4xx, above $6xx I don't know.

For $200 in difference you can eat twice at Michelin star restaurants in Tokyo. Starve for 11 hours and shut up lol
