Will this transcode for Plex well or do you need the K version of the i5?

It will transcode just fine. Just make sure you have a plex pass so you can turn on hardware transcoding.

Chips have Intel® Iris® Xe Graphics integrated. Supposedly fast enough to transcode 8K video, Is Iris it better than AMD 780M integrated - no way.

Maybe instead of a passively disparaging remark, you could provide context and education so they, and others, might learn.

Here's some comparison information, but it seems geared towards 3d rendering performance, opposed to encoding performance. Hopefully someone helpful can come along and shine more or better light on the subject.

Rasterization performance and hardware encoding/decoding are two different aspects of any GPU, integrated or dedicated. Radeon 780M is no doubt, is faster than Iris Xe, both 80 EU and the 96 EU version, by a good margin in Rasterization/gaming performance but the Hardware Encoding/Decoding unit in Intel Graphics, is superior and has better driver support and integration with most commonly used apps. That's why when you're planning to use the GPU for Multimedia / Streeaming purpose, instead of raw gaming performance, look for the hardware encoding and decoding support, especially with the apps you're planning to use.

it is been shown that you can at least get to 96GB instead of the advertised 64GB if that helps.

Considering the same but what software would you go with and would it be reliable to share this many hardware resources? Proxmox?

So if i add a PCIE M.2 expansion card (4x are available) and use one internal for OS and apps, then RAID the up to 6 remaining SSDs, how well would this make an All-Flash NAS compared to the Asustor FS6706T?

I found the SABRENT 4-Drive NVMe SSD to PCIe 4.0 X 16 Adapter Card with Active Cooling [EC-P4BF] for $99. Hopefully it fits etc.

This plus the PC plus an OS ssd for < $600 vs the FS6706T for $499 gives you faster cpu, more dedicated app space, USB4 expansion, and throws in 2 optical 10gbe ports.
Plus you can use it as a windows pc or server easier.

What do you think?

Check servethehome discussion on this box. There are three M2 slots, one of which can also be U2. There is a wifi slot you migh be able to add a 4th. There is also an expansion slot, you could add nvme x2 on a card with bifrucation, there are example cards in the servethehome thread. AN ISSUE, when using the 3 M2 slots, is that the third slot is only a pcie x2 slot. So, much slower than full pcie. In a raid, that means all the drives will be slowed to that speed. Now that still might be faster than your network speed, most home wifi are not fast. If you are using the 10gb nic you might be constrained. Depends on your drives and bandwidth. Certainly will slow things down if you are using the machine directly (where you could see the full nmve speeds), but, maybe not so much if just a nas (where the speed of the network is usually the slowdown). That said, with the 2 regular nmve + 2 on an expansion card + 10gb internal nic = about the fastest 4 drive mini nas right now. Of course, you could just grab an $800 Intel U2 drive at 16Tb and have full enterprise power shutoff protection and speed, without the raid benefits. Smilie

I would do a QNAP JBOD PCI adapter and Z-raid the drives.

From most everything I've seen, there is very little support for AMD GPU's in the selfhosted world. Although I'm sure the AMD iGPU is way more powerful than Intel's, Intel's has the benefit of strong community support for Quicksync. This lets machines do real time video transcoding without breaking a sweat.

I'm personally a bigger fan of AMD's CPUs than Intel's. But their iGPUs seem wasted in the home server space.
