Honestly, with Microsoft acquiring Blizzard I'm surprised they worked with one of the competitors instead of promoting their own MMO.

If you have a PC to play on, that definitely seems to be the way to go. Especially since there's a free trial that includes basically all the same content. There are some restrictions on that version, but you probably won't really bump up against most of them until at least the tail end of ARR. IMO, the only really obnoxious one is no retainers, so you only have your player inventory and chocobo saddlebag which is just not even remotely enough unless you eschew all the crafting jobs. Either way, by the time you really start running into some of the limitations you should have had more than enough time to decide if you want to pay to keep playing and remove the restrictions. And if you're a die-hard cheapskate, you can play a good chunk of the game, completely for free.
