Quote from Joe123456 :
I was a bit confused about the 2888-20 grinder listed as 4.5/5". It seems that Milwaukee was too when I called them. There is only one 2888-20 grinder. The selection on the Home Depot webpage allows you to choose which type 27 and type 1 guards you want with it, 4.5" or 5". Even though 4.5" discs would fit under the 5" guards, for maximum safety I think you are supposed to use 4.5" guards with 4.5" discs. Of course, the promotion did not let you choose, but I'm pretty sure they chose the 4.5" guards for us. That's really preferred since 4.5" discs are much more readily available. Why the 5" tool is less expensive than the 4.5" tool, I can't explain other than they want you to think you are getting a more valuable tool for "free." If you want an additional guard, you can get them at ereplacementparts.com.

4.5" type 27: 43-54-1200
4.5" type 1: 43-54-1210
5.0" type 27: 43-54-1221
5.0" type 1: 43-54-1230

CORRECTION: When you choose the 5.0 grinder on the HD website, the model number changes to 2882-20, so it is a different model. The 2882-20 doesn't have variable speed, so I guess that is why it is less expensive. So I guess that we are getting the 4.5" grinder with 4.5" guards. The grinder would be a lot better if it came with the 6.0Ah High Output battery, but the Hackzall may benefit from the lighter weight of the 5.0Ah battery provided.

Looking at my unopened box (returning) which came with the hackzall, my take is they're all 4.5 to/or 5" grinders as labeled. And comes with both 5" only guards (type 1 and type 27). If you want to use 4.5" accessories, you'll have to buy the 4.5" guards (still looking for pricing on this). In the 2880-20 user manual from HD, it specifies as such and there are comments under reviews mentioning this if you search for guard.
Yes, I think you are correct and I'm sure you meant the 2888-20, not the 2880-20. I'm not sure there is that much additional safety benefit to purchasing the 4.5" guards (though I haven't priced them) rather than just using the 5" guards with the 4.5" discs.
