QA Note: Code SPRING15 (from email)

Smoking Dad BBQ has a Youtube comparison on this unit and a couple of other models Youtube Link [youtube.com]

More info and user reviews at Fireboard.com [fireboard.com]

I have watched a couple of videos and the setup looks pretty simple. Not many grillers need this but I am one of those that have a difficult time controlling temperature at 180F or below. I will see if this will allow me to go to sleep at night without waking up to a burnt meat.

I have an honest and potentially dumb question. What's the point in investing in a massively expensive kamado-style smoker and this $300 modification to automate the temp control instead of just getting a relatively inexpensive electric smoker that has it built-in?

Yes but you'll need an adapter. https://www.flameboss.com/product...apter-kit/

For me it was the pizza oven use of the kamado that drew mw towards it. Other than that, if you take care of it, it should last you a considerable time.

For slow cooking alone I agree- a pellet style can do a great job also. If by "electric" you mean those standup refrigerator-door ones, I personally got sick of having to cut my briskets in half to make them fit.

Very valid question. And as someone who has a large big green egg, a traeger little tex elite, and a napoleon natural gas grille the egg gets the most use out of the 3. The flavor coming off the egg has a certain complexity to it. To me, i think its the blend of the char with the flavor of the smoke.
I think that devices like these are trying to get the easy-factor of a pellet smoker with the flavor of the Egg.
Pellet smokers are super easy, fire it up, set it and forget it. Go run some errands....mow the lawn...start drinking heavily....it keeps chugging along and will stay within +/- 15deg of whatever you set it to.
The egg isn't overly complicated, but you've got to be on top of it...i dont want to scare anyone off, but in the beginning of owning an Egg, you have to be on top of it...temps can skyrocket on you easily. Once you get the hang of it and know how much to open the vents, you can dial in the temp and it will stay pretty steady. I can pretty consistently hit my smoking temps on the egg as long as its not below 200deg, thats pretty tough. I usually smoke between 200-225 on the egg.
So i believe devices like these are trying to make the best of both worlds...get the flavor of lump charchoal but the set-it-and-forget-it of a pellet smoker.

It's a stand/mount option. https://www.fireboard.com/shop/fi...etic-base/
Without it you would just have to lay the Fireboard on a table or set it on something or lay it on the ground. With the magnetic base, it's like having a small stand to set it in that has a rubber bottom to keep it from slipping, or it can magnetically attach to something metal (not your grill itself because that would be too hot). It's nice to have, but not an absolute necessity.

It's a whole different level of smoke flavor, if you're into that. Also much more efficient for high heat cooking.

You don't need the stand but it does give you a little more protection from the elements. The Fireboard does fine in rain but I wouldn't leave it out for an extended period of time in bad weather. Great product and company. I just used mine Friday night to cook pulled pork overnight on my Weber Kamado. Started it at midnight at a lower temp and turned it up when I work up. Bumped it again when I wrapped and they were ready to rest several hours before dinner.

I use the non blower version with my pellet smoker to track all my smokes. Fantastic device and I love being able to go back through my cooks and see how long certain meats took at X temp and X weight. It's cheaper than the blower version even after discount in case anyone didnt know they have other version. Unfortunately, this site doesnt sell them to get the extra discount.

The app also has an estimated time of completion that accounts for a curve/stall etc at the current cook rate. Comes in handy if someone else is making sides and pestering you for an estimate.

Wifi has been flawless.

Text alerts actually work. (I think it has to get through the limit temp though - ex if set to 203, you'll get a text once it busts through 203 and hits 204.0....If I remember correctly since the last time I used it)

Ability to have 6 probes is nice.

Leaps ahead of those bluebird/govee shit bluetooth and wifi thermometers that pop up here every once in a while. Initial expense may be higher but I can't recommend the ease of use and tracking this thing has and has been flawless for the last ~2+ years for me. I now use a wifi traeger so I can even adjust the temp while being in the store picking up something. Smoking for me has unfortunately become more of a game on my phone lol. No longer really need to go to the smoker to check anything other than to spritz or wrap etc.

Not sure it matters but I use Android and no experience with the apple app.

I use the flame boss 500, but this is a serious competitor for that unit.

The ability to have up to six temp probes is awesome. The battery makes it easy to power up anywhere. And - I think this is important - CGS is a real store with real people and they support a LOT of folks doing every level of bbq. Definitely one of the good guys.

Thanks OP!! The coupon applies to other items too. I did not need the blower so I used the coupon for the Fireboard 2 and the magnetic base. This will make a perfect replacement for the dying controller on my Masterbuilt Gravity fed smoker

I have the BBQ Guru version of this (CyberQ). I'm still surprised at the overall cost for these things. There isn't a whole lot to it other than a fan and a circuit board that controls the fan speed based on temperature.

They definitely help keep temps where you want, but after all this time, I thought the overall cost of this stuff would come down by now.
