I have watched a couple of videos and the setup looks pretty simple. Not many grillers need this but I am one of those that have a difficult time controlling temperature at 180F or below. I will see if this will allow me to go to sleep at night without waking up to a burnt meat.

For slow cooking alone I agree- a pellet style can do a great job also. If by "electric" you mean those standup refrigerator-door ones, I personally got sick of having to cut my briskets in half to make them fit.
I think that devices like these are trying to get the easy-factor of a pellet smoker with the flavor of the Egg.
Pellet smokers are super easy, fire it up, set it and forget it. Go run some errands....mow the lawn...start drinking heavily....it keeps chugging along and will stay within +/- 15deg of whatever you set it to.
The egg isn't overly complicated, but you've got to be on top of it...i dont want to scare anyone off, but in the beginning of owning an Egg, you have to be on top of it...temps can skyrocket on you easily. Once you get the hang of it and know how much to open the vents, you can dial in the temp and it will stay pretty steady. I can pretty consistently hit my smoking temps on the egg as long as its not below 200deg, thats pretty tough. I usually smoke between 200-225 on the egg.
So i believe devices like these are trying to make the best of both worlds...get the flavor of lump charchoal but the set-it-and-forget-it of a pellet smoker.

Without it you would just have to lay the Fireboard on a table or set it on something or lay it on the ground. With the magnetic base, it's like having a small stand to set it in that has a rubber bottom to keep it from slipping, or it can magnetically attach to something metal (not your grill itself because that would be too hot). It's nice to have, but not an absolute necessity.
The app also has an estimated time of completion that accounts for a curve/stall etc at the current cook rate. Comes in handy if someone else is making sides and pestering you for an estimate.
Wifi has been flawless.
Text alerts actually work. (I think it has to get through the limit temp though - ex if set to 203, you'll get a text once it busts through 203 and hits 204.0....If I remember correctly since the last time I used it)
Ability to have 6 probes is nice.
Leaps ahead of those bluebird/govee shit bluetooth and wifi thermometers that pop up here every once in a while. Initial expense may be higher but I can't recommend the ease of use and tracking this thing has and has been flawless for the last ~2+ years for me. I now use a wifi traeger so I can even adjust the temp while being in the store picking up something. Smoking for me has unfortunately become more of a game on my phone lol. No longer really need to go to the smoker to check anything other than to spritz or wrap etc.
Not sure it matters but I use Android and no experience with the apple app.
The ability to have up to six temp probes is awesome. The battery makes it easy to power up anywhere. And - I think this is important - CGS is a real store with real people and they support a LOT of folks doing every level of bbq. Definitely one of the good guys.

They definitely help keep temps where you want, but after all this time, I thought the overall cost of this stuff would come down by now.
