I have a bunch of these. Expensive, but great product for Hue users.

Sidenote, one of my kids broke the interior mounting bracket I contacted Luton and they replaced it for free 😁

What's the difference in this versus a switch guard and using the app/smart home speaker to dim the lights?

It creates a physical button and dimmer dial onto the existing toggle switch. It's sometimes easier to just tap a button on the wall than pulling out your phone, especially for guests. I have mine set up in my master bathroom where I have 9 lights set up on 3 different gang switches around the bathroom, so now I only need to hit the Lutron Aurora button to control all of them at the same time.

Obviously you don't have to say anything. The idea of having to say something to turn on, turn off, or dim the lights is a bit ridiculous. With these switches, you can turn on/off the light or adjust the dim level as you enter or exit the room without having to say anything. Plus, with these switches, Hue lights respond instantaneously — no lag.

These switches are best for a room where have one or more set of lights that you want to control together (e.g., a bedroom). If you have multiple Hue lights you want to turn on/off or dim independently, from one switch, then there are better switches like the Hue Tap Switch.

I got these because every time my parents came over they would still turn the lights off as my guards had a whole in them and they were driving me nuts… the auroras make it impossible for guests to turn the switches off and provide a physical switch to turn the hues on and off if they don't have the app or I don't want them to have access to it.

Don't I have to pull it off the wall? The listing is unclear

With a forthcoming Hue bridge update, these switches should be compatible with Hues "natural light" functionality. With this functionality enabled, Hues adjust their color temperature based on the time of day.

As long as you have a light switch that looks like the one on the 1st picture on the bluebox, you just install it over the existing switch. Don't need to take anything off or wire anything.

And of course you need philips hue ecosystem.
