Wow. This is interesting to me. Might help with minor oil burning on my 2009 Prius. Reviews on amazon are mixed.

Just sharing some wisdom that I unwittingly gained from helping a friend with the EXACT same car as you a few years ago:

Check your PCV valve on the engine, make sure it's working properly, and replace [priusdiy.com] if you haven't yet and it's due for servicing.

Those Prius also have piston ring issues and that might also be something to look into, I worked on a friend's one that he bought and we fixed it up for cheap, we did a piston soak/top soak and that did a decent job to slow down the oil consumption (assuming you don't have a physical leak of motor oil). If you have the mechanical know-how, try changing those

Final thing, use a high mileage oil, that tends to help a bit more for these Toyota cars with oil consumption issues.

Thanks for your reply.
I've already replaced the PCV valve. I've done all the soaks/cleaners you can imagine. The oil consumption isn't too bad. About a quart every oil change. Most people would say that low of an oil burning car isn't worth even worrying about. I'm OCD about stuff like that. I'm definitely going to try this oil and see what happens.

Up the weight, I run Rotella T6 5w-40 in my 2010 Prius with no oil usage at 260K miles and 10K OCI.

Wow. I know it is a different engine, but I do 5k OCI and at 220k miles, I get the oil burning I described above. Not the worst, but still... I'm impressed that you go that long before OCI and still have no oil burning.

I believe there are two main issues with these engines, the control rings are underbuilt and the oil weight is too light. The 20 weight gets past the rings, burns, and in turn causes the control rings to stick. With a heavier-weight oil, this is less likely to happen. I also drive a lot of highway miles so the extended OCI is not to bad.

I too, have a 2nd gen Prius with oil consumption (~1qt./1200 miles) with 245k miles on the clock. Hoping this oil isn't a marketing ploy and will actually do some good. At $30, it's only ~$5 more than your standard premium oil; annualized, it's about $10-$20 more depending on your OCI.

Interesting bit of info from a 2007 Prius owner's manual - pg. 325, "Oil consumption: Max. 1.0 L per 1000 km (1.1 qt./600 miles, 0.9 Imp.qt./600 miles).
