I bought 2 of them. All the previous versions from different manufacturers didn't stay on the stem. One of the reviews said this one does. It's worth it for that alone. No more bending over or kneeling down for 2 or 3 minutes to air up a tire. So much safer to connect it and walk away.

Can this be connected to a compact battery powered inflator so that I don't have to thread 100 turns to the wheel stems before I begin to inflate?

No, you need an actual air hose that has the female connector part.

I have one like this connected to my Ryobi dual inflator. I couldn't tell you where I got the little male/male adaptor piece I have between them though because it's been awhile. I figured it out on my own though because I wanted to use the inflator on my box truck's tires and needed the reverse-head chuck for the outer rears because it has dual rear tires and the valve stems point in toward the center of the truck. It can be done, if you're a little creative.
