Does anyone have any opinions on this TV? I plan to use it with an external android box (Optimum stream box) exclusively. If I don't use the onboard smart features, is this a decent enough deal for a tv that could last a few years?

LED 4K TV's today are so gud, yet so affordable! Of course it will last 10+ years!

Fwiw, I have an equivalent model from 2019 still going strong with an Onn 4k box plugged into it.
Thank you. It's for my parents and the goal is to get the stream remote to control both the stream box and the tv. Optimum said the stream remote should support a newer model tv versus their current older one (~2015).

TCL generally makes decent budget TVs, as long as you only need a simple display and aren't expecting anything near OLED or more expensive TVs you should be fine. At the end of the day it's a sub $200 TV so don't expect anything crazy besides a working TV.
I have one sitting across the room from me as I type this and I like it. The smart features are snappy enough (could be better) and the tv can direct play most things from Plex surprisingly (HDR10 HEVC BD remux content, fancy subbed anime, etc.). The screen has some uniformity issues but it's $200 and how often are you watching black screen in a dark room? If you want a cheap tv I don't think you're getting better than these

Thank you both. Much appreciated. Now, I just need to find a swivel stand so it can sit on their tv stand .

This sounds like sarcasm. Real talk these are cheap for a reason, stick with your stream box

For your 12 year old, absolutely! You don't need anything top of the line.
