The credimus I have no idea what is going on there.
Out of the box, they just suck. I bought a 9 because I read a few reviews on REI that they are hard to slide on and I wanted an easy slip on for camp. They have no stretch, and are really tight at the bridge area. Maybe they'll loosen up, But it doesn't strike me as a purposeful design that anyone would put up with at full price. Also I've found the heel has to be slipped up in an unusual maneuver after you jam your foot in as there's no give to pull the heel on like most slip on shoes. I reordered it in an 8 again just to see if it fits still since I needed $35 to quickly place the reorder.

They're mostly obscured with the fat laces.
Maybe it's added texture in case you go laceless, but I think the tabs still need something. Thin cord lace might improve the look.
