DE (Double Edge wet shaving) requires simple know how first.

That looked to be a good deal for an Edward Jagger Style razor(holder). You can find one from $3 to 20 for just about any needs style or material. Double edge razor blades and packs of 100 could be found for 8 cents or less! Deluxe sharpest blade, for the thickest stubble are around just 25 cents. But those require know how and humble practice.

DE has its two sides for each, and easy instant rinsing and after both sides are full. That's three to eight full shaves before loose any sharpness and you just pop in another. Do not shave for a month with one blade because they will very slowly get duller and cause you to develop bad scraping habits, and take you backwards; like cartridges friction draging does.

Tip: I just squirt alcohol on the blades so they dry without rusting the edge. And times when just outlining the beard then one DE blade lasts practically forever. Always expect a new blade to be sharper and you be fine. Everyone does not need Feather blades. If you don't want to think much(?) then just get a smooth blade. Or if your new to face hair.DE is the most flexible. Even the scruffy stubble look. You choose.

If you haven't done DE before then you are suppose to get a blade sharpness just enough to glide through your stubble with zero tug, shaving very LIGHTLY, not like with cartridges.. And start with a holder/razor with mainly a tight gap guard, so it's harder to do the wrong angle. The window it will cut is narrower, as you angle your hand up and down with the thing against your face.

But get a wider gap for the closest shave ever, after being very practiced with very light force buffing, if needed (older shavers). At least a month or two, if shaving everyday, or every other. Why? Because your face really does have to get used to it (closer than you ever though possible), and SAFE DE guarded, without any irritation.

Now finally the real secret of these huge DE benefits (incidentally inexpensive) is if you hold the top cap of this thing flat against your face then slow rolling down in mico steps, as you buff a small area and then STOP cutting ANY deeper. Not by too much cutting angle, nor pushing it to hard against your face as much as cartridges force you to do. You LIGHTLY only need to flatten the bar across your face. AND you quickly learn to roll around your curves, with that good angle, and get used to the muscle memory that's only about 10 or 20% different than the way you shave now. Just do not then exclaim, hey this is easy and start experimenting. While this trial could alltogether be a test for you, still do it the way that it is known to work. It's not new. It just not been taught to most. And follow the general effective way, even if people have many little differences; that they develop with this.

There are slightly different good instructions(Internet). My method is very light buffs with each cleaning its way progressively closer WITHOUT cartridge dragging. And where it is not close enough for you. Acclimate first and later widen the holder gap instead. Counter intuitive to scraping.

You can try them all. Just don't blaze your own path here with this MUCH better way to shave.

You do not have to test until you get a nick! You should feel no pain, even barely. Ever! If you (after acclimation) are set up for light (sharper blade) and aggressive closeness (holder) then you would not feel it going almost to close. Progress closer in the smallest possible steps each day. Not just in one shave and you'll have no red face. Then if you over do it, a weeper is not a big deal when just starting out, as they go away in seconds; but YOU are the only stop of shaving to close. Just continue tomorrow without having to take days off to heal. And with no problem, you can easily shave around anything such as a mole you don't want shaved. Any pain or stinging, even slight then means you did it wrong. Listen; there is no reason for shaving that close. We're talking degrees of baby smooth you did not think possible(not cartridges) with no felt stubble, even rubbing your finger for a rub test aggressively against the grain (stubble growth direction). That's to much and hardest to achieve with zero errors. No felt with the grain, and barely against is enough. Until you want almost homemade dermabrasion for old pock marks. Go easy per day! You can try baby smooth (BBS) later; but never when first new to DE. During your first months then only shave with your grain. Save SHAVING your quick touch-up across pass for later, AFTER you get with the grain close, where then across the grain is barely and optionally needed. In time any against the grain pass should be almost nothing anywhere(so fast also), and extremely light, and on streached skin. You're just rounding off stubble in that direction. And why you need only one blade. And leaving SOME barely felt stubble, for after your acclimation time. It will still be closer and faster than cartridges, to start! However, this start is not all DE can do!

Beware; reviewers and shills blaming. Most new DE shavers never get acclimated, fear change that improvements require, while not finding their blade sharpness (vs. Smoothness) and then LATER a larger gap (holder parts, NOT sharper blade) to get closer without ADDING drag (shavers with thicker stubble, so sharper as needed and mainly more gap). With good technique only!

Beware the reviewers who just did it wrong.

And young new shavers have it fast and easy and are then they are ready to ajust, at least every decade; as their stubble gets tougher. Not tricked into cartridges and our US marketing BS; that suck as you age! All DE parts are pennies and plentiful. You might target a fine $20 adjustable and a $8 blade sampler pack.

Cartridges are not better, due to their one set dumb angle. Which can never fit all needs, like gambling.

If DE shaving was the over priced one then it would still be a better shave. However DE stuff is a steal. Count your blessings. I am not talking about diamond studded silly modded stuff, or unicorn creams. No, all DE parts you need, even the top rated, are actually cheaper for what you get and how long they last. Pennies. Slick deal!

Besides, a MUCH better and guarded shave the power of DE is you can affect different, closer zones across your face. Not one very irritated one. So closer on your chin where required. Easier on your neck, to eliminate razor bumps (like acne) the next day. And normal on your cheeks, or wherever for YOU. (Use ROUNDED trimmers on your body hair generally, inexpensive foil on any ear hair, to not go to close and separate out those tools.) And if ladies legs; then a sharpest blade in tight guarded holders works best and more like they are used to. For less acclimation period and correct angle required. Very very inexpensive, dear inflation victims.

Simple angle control per zone is the way. DE has no rival. I do not recommend a straight razor as they are unguarded. DE is the best and none gets a better shave. If you know the secret.

That said you'd be surprised. A better one of the finer foil shavers does get you by on day two of a previous DE cleaning shave. Not so much without DE and with more work face scrubbing where you could have Just shaved. But foil will always be less close and acne promoting. DE can actually eliminate your acne! But you have to heal progressively. And if you did do something stupid like experimenting with DE in new ways. Again the whole trial can be your experiment, if you give it a month; BUT not without simply going easy on the angle. And with ANY shave blade then of course you never go sideways, and you knew that from cartridges. It's just when working out your 10% different technique (from carts) then never go sideways when deciding your way to get those tough spots. You just slightly weight to one side to get a smaller area than the razor bar.

And by the way! You CAN shave faster, for the shave quality you get; but go slow your first several shaves.

And unless you're crazy or something there is no fear here. And when you see it's 90% the same experience as carts; do NOT put your hand on automatic as if it's a cartridge yet. Keep your self from the cartridge dragging. Then DE will become automatice. AND even if shaving with way to sharp a blade for your face and a huge razor holder gap that it to close then simply angrling down only to where it starts cutting (by passes not mor angle) THEN you can try it with no problems anyway! If you eventually have to push harder to get closer then you need a bigger gap AND to push less instead. The weight of a heavy razor top is about enough. If you don't far lighter than carts then after a month widen the gap. Which requires lighter! And practiced.

Always angle your cut. And you need no protractor to find 30 degrees. Just angle it till it just starts to cut.

The hardest thing is WAITING many shaves, before going (basically) normal level baby bottom smooth. Just be determined. ZERO ERRORS ONLY. Progress in the tiniest possible steps, one per day. So that when you find the crazy, unnecessary closest even a cold splash of water eliniates any weeper. And if you get red faced then you are not waiting to check it 10m after you shave. And coconut oil fixes it fast. Stay back from that for easy close shaving. Tiniest increments pet day saves you from not knowing until you know, ya know? OPTIONAL. And that is too close. No one cares it's that close. Pick your limit. Just know it is really possible WITHOUT any errors. And eventually easy. Dont rush the days. You may have to pause and rest your face, delaying your progression, if you do. Truth.

And most will need to still barely feel some stubble on your neck areas; but that's touching it rubbed against the grain.

And the real test of closeness is after you ended with a dab of non clogging lotion, about 10 minutes AFTER you shaved. So you must just not worry and get it next time.

EVERY single shave improving efficiency. Never any errors. Best wishes.

Get a big synthetic shave brush and shave cream; because some of the best are actually cheaper! And this is the fastest way to wash your face! TOBS or Speick stick. Nothing in a spray can.

Shave after shower for softened stubble and smoother razor and blade add setup.
