Mechanical??? As opposed to what exactly? Were the kids in the marketing department just that desperate for one more word in the title?

It means it's not digital controls, rather physical knobs to operate it. During a power outage, this should resume once power is restored. This is a fair price, and I picked one up yesterday.

Ah, it does make a bit more sense when explained like that 😁. Otherwise, I've never met an air conditioner that wasn't mechanical. Even a block of ice and a fan are still mechanical..... just a block of ice melting/evaporating is mechanical. Analog Controls would have made perfect sense in the title. Oh well, thanks for clearing that up for me!

Anyone know how much of an energy hog these are compared to something with an eco-mode/thermostat? Need something to cool a small bedroom while we sleep, but wondering if cheaping out will mean a much higher electric bill seeing as this would presumably just spit out cold air all night.

Is there a good alternative with those features?

The realistic difference between eco mode vs non eco will likely be 5-8%. The only thing running with a non eco model is the fan which does not take much power to maintain. You'll probably spend more electricity starting and stopping the fan every 5 minutes then you would just letting it run. But a 20 minute cycle time is a different story. For maximum efficiency in an air conditioner, look for one that is inverter based. For example:

Makes sense. The inverter ones seem to be around double or more the price of this one, so I'm wondering any electricity savings would be lost since I really only run it for a few weeks a year.

The difference in purchase cost is substantial to be sure. But to give you an idea of the savings you can expect over time, I have 4 months worth of electric bill that tell a story. Last year I upgraded with 2 of these:

https://www.amazon.com/LG-Inverte...hdGY&psc=1

Then I saved the next 4 months worth of electric bills to see for myself any difference, and too so I can show and tell when I get around to the video review of them. See pics below. For context, I replaced two energy star rated 12,000btu AC's with two of these 14,000btu LG inverter based AC's and that was the only real change I made from one year to the next. These are two very expensive AC units, but they are very heavy but very powerful, super quiet, and very efficient, and well, I just love them!

For a small bedroom or office this definitelty gets the job done. Annual opperating cost is estimated at about $44 per year. So no you won't save much by buying a larger inverter. As long as your room is less than 200 sq ft this is the practical route for now.

If you're trying to cool a larger space the inverter tech is absolutely worth it. I have this 5K Model and then an inverter 10K. The inverter is wayyy better and noticable quieter. But I wouldn't buy it for the smaller room because it just doesn't make sense. Operating cost for the 10K is $68 so even though that's fantastic for that size it's not cheaper than $44. And they don't make the small sizes with inverter tech. Eventually they will though and then AC operating costs will really be a non issue for small spaces as they will likely fall to $20-$30 per unit!

It's the Chinese language: mechanical = turning the nubs. = English: analog control……lol

FYI, have two of these, fairly week and barely cool a 15x15 room. Contemplating returning them.
