change the drain valve immediately if you buy and install, this one has a plastic drain valve

I've been reading about this problem. I noticed a Rheem at Home Depot is advertising a metal drain valve. I looked at my Richmond (Rheem Menards brand) that I installed in 2008, the drain valve in that is plastic. I wonder how big of deal that really is.

Mine was installed in the 80's and just started dripping. Are the thread sizes all universal? What would I replace it with?

Not worth the trouble. The gas line, water pipes, exhaust length would have to to be changed. If you are DIY, same length is just easier.

Zero idea. I installed mine in 2008 and haven't touched it since. In fact, I'm thinking of replacing it because of its age (why I saw this thread). Yours is probably almost as old as I am, holy moly!
