10/14/2020 bought Opal 1.0 with side tank. 3/29/2021 warranty claim for yellow ring of death. Nothing would clear it. Left vinegar in there for a few days multiple times. Bought special solution. Refurbished unit came in. 1/24/2022. Same issue with the yellow ring of death. This time I only used distilled water and cleaned the unit every month. Got a brand new unit this time.

This unit also failed again and we were without nugget ice for a little bit.

Bought the fridgeaire one from Costco. So far it's been really good. It's been at least 6 months.

So avoid opal. The premium price doesn't mean anything.

I can't just be cooperative with Costco when I buy it?

Jeez! I've been running the first gen Opal since 2019. Based on the some of the reviews and mold horror stories, I should be dead right now. Mine still produces great ice but the door sensor is failing. I'd say it's been a good run.
Same. I've had mine a few years and sometimes once it's full it doesn't make more until I open and close the door. Mines started developing a leak and keeps putting water underneath the unit by the tray. Might have to look for another

Could take a picture of the back of the Frigidaire? Could you use the side tank from the opal on that one?

What's the use case for all these table top ice makers? Don't have it in the fridge, not working anymore, this ice tastes better, need more ice than the fridge can make? That's all I can think of but with the number of deals I see on this seems like it's an item people. Buy
I've seen patterns lately of fridges with built in icemakers sucking/breaking down.

This is a great alternative. If you separate it, you can replace the individual parts (fridge and icemaker). This also gives more freezer space.

My icemaker bonked out on me a few yrs back (among other things, one being the LED board that costs an obnoxious $500 to replace)... after a 3rd replacement, i got tired of it...

So i bought a portable icemaker on here (cheap, $50 insignia).

Needless to say i've made my money's worth. It's now a staple in the kitchen. And i will always continue to buy portable icemakers.

Had mine since last Christmas and I love it! Pro Tip: Use distilled water ONLY, buy the filter attachment on Amazon (redundant, I know, but mold.) and splurge for the side tank. Other than cleaning and flushing regularly and dusting/blowing out the vents, this thing is a workhorse. Worth the monies to me. 😁
I agree. My 1st gen is still going after 3 years.

Dont buy this, its garbage. Mine lasted for a little over a year, then the compressor went out. I had kept up with the cleaning cycles and used filtered water. I took it apart to troubleshoot, and it looked dirty with mold and cheaply made. Its loud and not insulated at all, to when its not actively making ice, the ice in the tray melts fast. One issue I found is mold grows inside soo fast because the components get hot and heat up an internal thats filled with water. They installed a uv light to try to stop the mold in the tank, but its not enough for all the components. It honestly gives me the impression that its designed to last one year. Buy something else.

Possibly. Just out of town now. However I'll say the fridgeaire's built in water tank is much better and easier to fill than opal's.

Customer support said buyer and registered name didn't match. My wife bought it for me and I registered it in my name. I've heard nothing back. It doesn't make ice after 6-7 months. They're a sht show

I have the Gen 1 for about 3yrs now. I clean it every other month. No issues with mold that I've seen. Still chugging along.

Bought this 2.0 in Sep 2022 and it failed in March 2024. We loved it while it worked! Lucky bought the insurance with this at the time due to the 1.0 woes I read about beforehand. When it failed (all water leaked out from the bottom) the authorized repair center could not even fix it so got paid out and now we wont consider buying it again but I do miss the ice 🫠🥲.

Good price, but mine is super loud.... wines and augers must of the day. Agree side-tank is a must.
Same here. Good functionality, but very noisy!

All counter top ice makers are prone to mold. To reduce mold, use clean drinking water. No, your Brita filters aren't great at removing hard water. In fact, certain elements in water cannot be removed by Brita filters. Use distilled water or drinking water, RO water is also good. Next, keep the water circulating. If you make ice once a day and leave it there for a week, it's going to grow mold. A sitting ice maker is mold. Finally, buy an ice maker cleaner and clean it every two to four weeks depending on usage.
You make me want to just buy a fancy ice tray instead
