The fact that they store historic payment methods makes me just not want to use them - seems like a hacker's dream, a large-scale etailer that has every credit card number, cvv, exp date, and cardholder address in a quickly searchable database? Even under the guide of preventing promotion abuse that's just high risk practice, right?

Use a Privacy disposable card or similar if you take advantage of these QVC deals - this is probably the best way to get a discount on Switch games.

There's a concept called salt and hashing that would allow them to check for pre existing customer info without storing said info. Just the hash is stored which is useless to attackers. Whether or not they're doing that I have zero idea and I'm not trying to discredit your concern in the least bit, just providing context on other possibilities.

If they could guarantee compatibility with Switch 2 (and higher frame rate / resolution support with existing games) i'd dump the clip on way more games this gen.

It's actually illegal to store all the fields you claim. Credit card merchants utilize a payment processor's method of tokenization, so they only store a tokened identifier of the CC including (IIN + last4 + exp) which can only be used within the merchant, and nowhere else. Payment forms are also entered in a CDE (iframe for payment processor) which ensures the merchants checkout pages are PCI complaint and not stored and vulnerable to attackers.

TLDR: Just so you're informed: saved payment info could only be used within the merchant if the CVV is known, but no raw credit card information is stored for malicious hackers.

Illegal = Not happening. Gotcha, thanks! (I know it's not legal - But it sure is easier when you're using that data in an exclusionary capacity)

I'll go ahead and identify the acronyms that you've thrown out:

IIN = Issuer Identification Number
CDE = Cardholder Data Environment
PCI = Payment Card Industry

I appreciate the brief primer on SAQ-A compliance - but I'm just sharing a concern that the merchant may be more interested in self-enrichment than compliance.

I should also share that I find your addition to the conversation helpful, and none of what I'm saying should be considered personally - it's solely relating to retailers using Cardholder data for purposes other than processing payment (I.E. Promotion qualification). Thank you for adding detail!

Another FYI/TIL since we're on the topic 🙃

Acronyms are abbreviations that you can pronounce as a word like NASA or SCUBA, or NATO, whereas initialisms are abbreviations you cannot pronounce, like IIN, CDE, PCI

Just use a virtual card via credit card if you are worried about your card info getting leaked online. I've done this deal with QVC like 4 times in the past year for games I wanted to buy and no problems so far. Same shipping address but a new credit card number (using virtual card) every time.
