I don't think it was. I've been keeping an eye on this.
It must be some other model.

This has a mobile CPU, not a desktop CPU.

There are reports of several HX processors (Disclaimer - I don't know if this is one of them) hitting the same voltages that are causing damage to the desktop processors, resulting in instability. It's not recognized officially by Intel, but it's still possible that you aren't safe.

Seems more like an aggressive BIOS from the laptop maker than a CPU issue. I think most laptops use conservative settings to keep things cool and fans silent. Gaming laptops, like desktops, like to push the limits on the CPU to get top benchmarks and performance. I think if the CPU is run at spec'd power limits, you're fine.

I'm not an expert in the BIOS/CPU interaction, but my understanding of the issues were more that the CPU isn't honoring the limits being set, so even if you have a standard or conservative BIOS setup, the CPU can overvolt and cause damage. Also something-something microcode.

I don't care either way, I just bought a Ryzen laptop so I don't have to think about it (until whatever issue these have is uncovered, there's always something 🤣) - just pointing out that it may not be so cut and dry. Buyer do your own research. Here's a couple jumping points - https://www.reddit.com/r/GamingLa...y2ALnJ9u_j

https://www.tomshardware.com/pc-c...in-testing

EDIT: IMO, even if it is a BIOS-aggressiveness issue rather than a hardware issue, I don't think that excuses it. You're still at the mercy of your manufacturer. If these HX Intel gaming laptops are being pushed out with tuning that causes damage to your CPU, it shouldn't be swept under the rug as "oh it's just a gaming laptop thing, go tune everything to be within safe/published limits" - it should come that way, and be up to the purchaser if they want to push things into potentially-damaging territory. You shouldn't even have to think about this. Hopping off of the soapbox now.
