Darn. I paid $255 last BF and have been waiting for a good deal on hard drives still.

These things rule. I know it's easy to get in a HDD arms race but I bought a 220+ and 2x refurb 16tb drives and it's been awesome for 2 years now no issues. I don't stress about capacity and it's pretty easy to just set and forget. I do most computing stuff on a MacBook 12" low voltage laptop I have plugged into the router but do run Plex off it and it works great. Note iirc this doesn't have the right CPU to run Plex transcoding well so you may need a dedicated box for that - there's cheap $99 n100 windows boxes that should do that pretty well

It does transcode Plex. Btw, how loud is it? Will I hear it in another open spare bedroom on the same floor I sleep?

Simply put, you don't. When you buy a NAS you lock yourself into the number of bays that it has. I just recently upgraded from a 2-bay to a 4-bay.

I love Synology and would highly recommend to anyone leaning towards a NAS.

old pc + drives (which you'd have to buy to use this anyways), and basic unraid license = cheaper and more functionality that this.

Yes, true. But the effort to set it all up is not minimal. I'm not a computer illiterate, but I'd rather spend some more money for a plug and play solution than time configuring stuffs.

Looking to upgrade from a DS218j to this DS224+. Anyone know how I'd go about transferring my existing data (about 1TB on each disk) from the DS218j to the DS224+?

I see both DS223 and DS223J are on sale on NewEgg. Are they not the best sale? I'm not familiar with Synology but in the market for one.

I will need to the same. I think you would need to transfer all to an external drive and upload it to the DS224+. The + models are recomended to use Btrfs file system. But I'm very new the NAS game so don't quote me on this

Don't quote me, but I believe you just physically put the drives in your new NAS and you're done. Assume you aren't replacing the drives too

Not internally anyway, you can plug in external drives with the USB port. It's not a great solution but it's something.

I run 2 of these and would recommend them.
