I use these in Houston last few weeks with all the rain we got and I throw one on the large puddle by my driveway and my neighbor and it seems to help lessen mosquitoes compared to when I don't do it.

Like the other commenter said, I've seen "30 days" everywhere I've looked. My guess is that it's based on the diameter of the curved cylinder that forms the ring. The thickness of the dunk is the main determining factor, not the size of the body of water. And that's why it still takes ~30 days if you break the dunk into quarters.
