Forgive my ignorance, but "why", when a M5100 11s 11-51T mini groupset (shifter/RD/Cassette & chain) can be had for $160 in outlets like Thundermountain & others before discounts with FS, or full OEM set with the above + Shimano crankset, chainring & BB for $130ish though AliX ?

$260 for this is extreme...you get XT M8100 for that (won't work with an HG freehub, but...the m5100 will or the XT will do it too with a 11-51 12s cassette from Sunrace, ZTTO or equiv).

If you love Box, ofc, but objectively, I fail to see the value, even after discounts.

I really dislike this comment. You see this everywhere today. If you are not like me, then you are wrong! I have been a mountain bike and roadie for 30 years. I have had every set up. Old school 3x mountain bike groups were the worst! These days I run 1x11 shimano xt. I love it. I have grx 12 speed and 11 speed on my gravel. I have shimano 1x10 set up on my wifes bike. I have a 1x9 set up on my travel SS coupler bike. Guess what, I ride them all and love them all.

A true "mountain biker" is a person that likes to ride. Single speed, double, rigid, fully, who cares. Although those single speed rigid guys are nuts! LOL. Box is a good groupset, the jumps are big but it doesn't matter. The only people who really need narrow jumps are the pros or cat 1 type of guys that are hyper focused on cadance and power levels. The other bikers out there just need stuff that have a big enough gear range and work. The box stuff is good enough. Deore is good also.

You can get deore 10 and 11 speed groupsets on eBay and Ali for around this price.

11-50 with only 9 speeds is going to have some pretty unpleasant jumps between gears.

I don't disagree about over biking but it depends what you mean. The cassette is 11/50, and the box stuff works pretty well. So I wouldn't see it has a big drop off. But to your example, someone that went and bought a walmart bike trying to keep up with a 20lb xtr carbon bike would hate it. But you could throw this box 9 stuff on a china carbon frame and be good. My point being, for the average rider the jumps in gears don't matter, its the range of gearing.
Yeah I think it just comes down to different strokes for different folks since everyone's doing different stuff and, at the end of the day, all that matters is you're having fun out there. Smilie

I have not tried Box, but I have heard that that is kind of the point, and I have both 11 and 12 speed Shimano, and my standard shift is 2 clicks, up or down. Do I even need those middle gears? I'd like to try the Box setup, but not spend money on swapping perfectly good Shimano components.

I just got the Box Three 9 speed in the mail yesterday and installed it.

I personally think it's better quality than low end deore model but obviously you decide what's worth your money
I just received my Box 3. I went 11-46. I haven't installed it yet but looks very stout and well built.

IMO not a deal. Many others have said it, but great group sets can be had for these prices from Shimano.

Box is a solid choice. Robust product. But like others have said, you can have a good 1x11 for this price from Shimano. That's going to give you a smoother shift and more options.
If you are interested in getting away from the big 2, Box is a solid brand.

Never tried these before but looking at the specs might be a good option if you need to update an OLD MTB. It uses Shimano HG and doesn't work with direct mount.

these are available for the same price on Amazon (sold by Box direct) -- which makes the 9 prime for $71 a pretty good deal for those xbikers out there.
Just noticed this.. only if it was the same price on Amazon when I ordered these .. I wouldn't have bought two... Lol

If you're a true mountain biker, you know that 1x9 is not the way to go. If you're looking for an upgrade, go for 1x12 SRAM or Shimano. It'll make all the difference!
Lol. I rode 1x8 up until about 2015 when I switched to 1x10.

I "down graded" from 11 speed XT to microshift advent X 10 speed on my full squish. Never had a problem with too big of jumps between gears. Even with 10 speeds I'm jumping 2 or 3 gears at a time for the most part. I've never ran the box 9 speed but I did their 11 speed and didn't care for it. The spring tension on their RD was so high it took a lot of thumb effort to change gears and eventually wore the shifter out. That bike my hard tail is back on 11 speed shimano deore with their 11-51 cassette. Range matters number of gears no so much.

You have a good point but I think that poster just meant manufacturers are pushing and selling 1x12s for the "best performance" and do it all. And nowadays 1x12s prices are getting lower too. Of course for me if I ever need the 51T gear I better ride the e-bike, it's just too steep for my heart getting up and over that hill...lol
