I switched over to buying blocks from them a few years ago as my usenet needs went down.

Great deal for unlimited from a trusted company.

You can download TV Shows, magazines, books, movies etc. There are a lot of things that people post on the internet and it is all accessible with a good internet connection, good internet company and a good newsreader. The internet provider should give you access to a newsreader. Have fun with it it's a Wild West out there.

I have been unable to signup for an account with this rate. It keeps crashing and sending me to pick my plan at $60/year unlimited.

They have a point, it's been around for 40 years and if you don't know what it's for and a google search doesn't enlighten you, it's probably not for you.

I'll answer your question though:

At a basic level, Usenet is used for reading text or downloading binary files. It's been around since 1980 and in the current form since 1987. People had discussions on there, posted porn and pirated software and music. I mean it's mostly used for downloading stuff these days vs discussion forums afaik.

I guess people are still using it for tv shows, movies, video games, music etc.. but I haven't used it for close to 10 years because it's outdated for downloads. Torrents got huge then download sites like Megaupload got popular (which was later raided). Download sites are the most popular now but it's sometimes just a preference - usenet can be used with some plugins for downloading tv shows.

So main use unless somebody corrects me: illegal stuff

Usenet, NetNews, Newsgroups - all the same thing.
What is the first rule of Usenet?

1. Look for movie
2. Find link referencing movie and click it / load into usenet reader
3. Download movie
4. Play different movie

^ Also an acceptable answer

FYI, $6 / month = $24 / year and they bill you for 12 months in one go. Just signed up for this deal and it's advertised on their front page.
